Most Wanted - July

Posted July 4th 2012 by Anthony DiPalma.

Burgers, hot dogs, and chlorine. The sweet scents of summer have us craving for our air conditioners and videogames. What could be more American than supporting the ever-growing entertainment industry we know and love? This month, we've got some titles that will make JRPG fans squeal with excitement. Why not? Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, and more will be occupying our time in the same way the hippies are occupying Wall Street under the intense heat of the summer sun.

First on our list is Theatrhythm Final Fantasy, a unique take on the 20 year-old franchise that defined the role playing genre. Instead of brandishing swords and magic throughout a sixty hour adventure, characters from throughout the series will band together to create music (HAH! Get it? Band? Music? It's a joke) and defeat their enemies. Of course, one of the most notable aspects of the Final Fantasy series is the music, which is still some of the best damn music ever composed. Seriously, who doesn't hum the theme to One Winged Angel every now and then?

This unique title is sure to be an attention grabber. Heroes of Ruin is an action-RPG with seamless drop-in/drop-out co-op. This basically means that you can venture forth on your journey alone or with friends, and accessing Wi-Fi hotspots rewards players with loot and weapons. Players are still rewarded with daily challenges and a sense of connection between the developer and the player even after the game is released. Heroes of Ruin is essentially a dungeon crawler, but with plenty of great features, this ambitious title might just gain an enormous fanbase.

Plus de jeux avec la musique! That's French for "More games with music" because this title, Rhythm Thief & the Emperor's Treasure takes place in Paris and stars Raphael, a thief who steals priceless pieces of Parisian art and returns them days later. Raphael is eager to start his biggest score, but to do that he must be guided throughout the streets of Paris as the player must slash, swipe, tap, and swing their way to the beat of the music to get Raphael through these vibrant, 3D landscapes. Certainly a unique title, if anything. Il sort le 10 juillet! (That means that the game is coming out on July 10th. Just some more French humor, you know.)

Mercenaries? Epic journeys? Cinematic adventures? Headed up by one of the original creators of Final Fantasy? Where do I sign up? Mistwalker's The Last Story is a JRPG through and through, and who could deny that the Nintendo Wii certainly needs some great third-party support? Since I've asked like, six questions, let me tell you about The Last Story. This is a game where tactical combat is necessary and players must come up with strategies to defeat various enemies. The story (THE LAST ONE! HAR!) revolves around Zael, a warrior imbued with powers and dreams of becoming an honorable knight. When he and his merry band of misfits reach the capital however, they soon realize that honor is not the driving force behind knighthood.

One thing Kingdom Hearts fans love is, well, more Kingdom Hearts. As a blind fanboy of anything Square-Enix has done, I'm excited to see where Sora and Riku will go next. Oddly enough, Mickey and Yen Sid (Yen Sid is "Disney" spelled backwards, for you people who don't like reading things backwards) will be sending our heroes to "Sleeping Worlds," which are worlds that the player has yet to see. This is great news for fans because seriously, nobody wants to go back to Agrabah.

That's it for this month! It's a very Japanese time for gaming, and who can complain about that? If you don't have a Nintendo 3DS, now is the time to invest in one!

Glad America is finally getting The Last Story, such an awesome battle system, I'm hoping we see a sequel one day. By the way it does actually have online multiplayer ;)
