The evil crime boss, Mr. X has returned to gain control of the city once again, and has kidnapped Adam Hunter, one of the heroes from the first game! Axel Stone and Blaze Fielding set off to rescue their captured comrade, and are joined by the gigantic wrestler Max, and Adam's kid brother skate as they proceed through the dangerous streets to crack knuckles and crash heads.
Streets of Rage II is very much an evolution of the original game. While the first Streets of Rage game could have debatably aged a little better, the sequel fairs a little better in comparison. The overall game play remains the same, with the player guiding a muscle-bound hero through the city, fighting thugs, punks and gangs as they head to the source of the crime syndicate, but there are several key changes. For one, the special move from the first game where the hero would call on police reinforcements to bombard the area with gunfire is no more. Each character now has two personal special attacks to beat foes with. For example, Axel will now perform a huge flaming punch when he is stationary. If moving, he'll perform a rapid punch frenzy, knocking his enemies back and forth like rag dolls.
The game continues the series' tradition of great music, and with many very memorable tunes.
