Star Fox 64
Reader Rating:

The sequel to the original game on the SNES, Star Fox 64 is considered by most to be the high point in the history of the Star Fox series. It was the game that first brought the series into 3D, and boasted several unique worlds, branching paths, huge boss fights, and a likable set of wingmen that accompanied you through the adventure.
For those unfamiliar with the formula, the Star Fox games are on-rails, forward-flying, shooters. You're given control of an Arwing starfighter, and are sent to battle enemies across the many worlds of the Lylat system, from the Earth-like planet of Corneria, to a lonely asteroid belt at a far corner of the system, to the fiery surface of the Lylat system's star itself.
The game is based around racking up points by destroying as much as you possibly can. You can rack up bonuses by destroying multiple enemies with a single shot, either by using a bomb, or a charged up laser shot that homes in on its target. At the end of each stage you're confronted by one of Andross' generals, usually in some kind of giant ship or mech, and the boss fight begins.
Graphically, the game still looks pretty nice today. The opening scene of Corneria with you and your team swooping across the ocean looks great, and you can see the reflections of your ships in the water, and even leave a wake if you fly too close to the surface. Nothing you'd blink twice about today, but this was one of the first N64 games.
Legacy...
Star Fox 64 was, quite honestly, one of the best games available for the N64. I'd say 1,000 points for a classic like this is a bargain. This is also the first time that the game has been released since its original debut on the N64, so the Virtual Console is definitely you're best bet in playing it.Reader Reviews
