The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Reader Rating:

Among other praise, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time has been hailed as "The Game of the Century", which at the time meant that critics and gamers alike largely considered it to be the best video game ever made. Many still do.
Making the smoothest transition to 3D since Super Mario 64, the premiere N64 Zelda epic boasted a huge, immersive overworld filled with stirring music and memorable characters, an adventure that spanned 11 challenging dungeons, and an innovative control scheme that quickly became the standard for 3D adventure games. Link's quest added a new beginning to the legend of Hyrule that still plays a part in Zelda storylines to this day, in which a young Link races against time to protect the Triforce against Ganondorf, the King of Thieves. The ensuing tale brought him over mountains, underwater, through forests and deserts, and even through time. Using the legendary Master Sword as a time portal, Link fights evil as a child and also seven years later as an adult in a future where Ganondorf has the Triforce in his possession and the landscape is mired in ruin. With a gripping story pushed by real-time cutscenes and incredible gameplay throughout, Ocarina stands the test of time as one of Nintendo's greatest achievements.
Legacy...
Ocarina of Time has already made it twice to the GameCube, once coupled with Master Quest (which is identical to Ocarina other than remixed temples), and again in The Legend of Zelda Collection which contained The Legend of Zelda, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, Ocarina of Time, and Majora's Mask. Both discs are fairly rare and come at a high retail price, so 1,000 Wii Points isn't too high a price to pay for the best game of the N64 generation.Reader Reviews
