Ecco the Dolphin
Reader Rating:

Considered a masterpiece by many, and a borefest by some, but everyone can probably agree that SEGA's Ecco the Dolphin remains one of the most atmospheric puzzle adventures of all time. It stars Ecco, a young dolphin who finds himself stranded and alone when his pod inexplicably vanishes from the ocean. It's Ecco's task to explore the watery depths, tangling with sharks, jellyfish and his own need for oxygen, while looking for clues as to his pod's whereabouts.
The game gives players full control of Ecco and all of his dolphin moves. You can swoop through the depths at great speed, shove enemies with your nose, and even skim along the surface and jump through the air and over rocks. You're also given access to Ecco's sonar, which allows you to not only survey the area for exits and enemies, but also communicate with fellow dolphins and solve puzzles.
Legacy...
Ecco's the kind of game you'll either love or hate. It's by no means a package of action and excitement; it's actually quite mellow and good for chilling out as you make your way through the ocean to some of the most soothing music ever to have been butchered by the Genesis' sound chip. If that sounds like fun, check it out! VC will be your best bet to playing it.Reader Reviews
