Golden Axe was an arcade game released by Sega in 1989. After the success of the arcade game, Sega released multiple ports for a variety of systems. On the Sega Genesis, the graphical quality of the game was noticeable degraded but extra levels were added which appeased most gamers.
This game features three playable characters: a barbarian, a dwarf, and an amazon. Each are armed with a sword or an axe and also have access to elemental magical powers. In some cases you can knock off enemies off of steeds which can then be used by the player. The player hacks and slashes his or her way through countless enemies and a variety of levels to save the king and princess of the land of Yuria from the villain, Death Adder.

Originally released as an arcade game by Sega in 1989, a Sega Genesis port was released near the end of the same year. Ports were also released for the Sega Master System, PC, Amiga, and many other systems. The Genesis version was released on Nintendo's Virtual Console on the 28th of November, 2006.Reader Reviews
I remember playing Golden Axe for the first time at a small arcade in Spain, and damn did my brother and I spend them pesetas playing this coin-op (and its contemporary brawler, TMNT: The Arcade Game). Only problem is, I was too young to even remember the name of the game, and I eventually forgot about it.
That's until a couple years later, when a friend of mines brought his american Genesis over (our PAL Megadrive hadn't been released yet) and had this game in his -already impressive- collection. Despite playing it in black and white due to NTSC not being widely supported in our part of the world, I immediately fell back in love with this charming little beat'em'up as we used to call them back in my era.
What is not to love about this gem? You pick one character, and go give a horrifying death to hordes of innocent enemies who did nothing wrong but emprison and torture a few dozens villager childrens! Along the way you'll travel the land level by level, fighting hundreds of lambda grunts, skeletons and sub-bosses, and kicking midget mini-butts in mini-Bonus stages to collect magic and life vials.
A press on the A button will unleash a devastating (well, depending on the selected character and vials used) attack on all enemies on the screen. There are also some limited strategy aspects, like luring foes to fall into pits to avoid fights, or riding phantasmagoric creatures that travel faster and cause more damage. The ability to double tap any direction to run, as well as perform jumping attacks make for a relatively varied experience, especially by 1989 arcade brawlers standards, and will make the road to kick Death Adder's bottoms and reclaim his Axe all the more fun, especially if you bring a friend or sibling to join the cooperative massacre bliss.
My only problem with Golden Axe is that if I couldn't play with the dwarf, I wouldn't play at all. To this day you can kill me, you won't have me pick the barbarian or that underclothed babe. Hello, the game is called Golden Axe, not Golden Pocket Knife!
