The Biggest Mistake Ever?

Posted August 3rd 2012 by Jordan Mammo.

Last week, Ubisoft co-founder and CEO Yves Guillemot declared that a new generation of consoles was overdue. "What we missed was a new console every five years," he said. "We have been penalized by the lack of new consoles on the market... it's important for the entire industry to have new consoles because it helps creativity."

Guillemot went on to say that, "If you can't take risks because people don't buy, you don't innovate. And if you don't innovate, customers get bored."

The month before, Square Enix's worldwide technology director Julien Merceron chided Sony and Microsoft for letting the current console generation go on as long as it has, saying "It's the biggest mistake they've ever made."

Shoot to Thrill: Thoughts on E3 2012

Posted June 12th 2012 by Jordan Mammo.

A couple of weeks ago, Square-Enix unveiled the latest Hitman: Absolution trailer to a whirlwind of controversy. The video featured the main character slaughtering a number of scantily clad female assassins in slow motion after they had (naturally, of course) undressed themselves. "Distasteful" would be a massive understatement. The game spurred a passionate and sometimes enlightening discussion on the internet, as well as enough outrage to compel its developers to clarify their intent. Speaking to IGN, Tore Blystad said, "We just wanted to make something cool, it wasn't the intention to stir up anything."

This is exactly the problem. Who thinks this shit is cool? Forget subtext or any other kind of deeper meaning, this was clearly imagined and engineered for one reason and one reason alone: spectacle.

No one could've predicted this, but Hitman was only the start of two weeks of gratuitous and repulsive violence. It segued into a new Tomb Raider trailer and peaked last week with the most disturbing E3 Expo I've witnessed yet.

REVIEW Journey

REVIEW Journey

The last thing I expected to do in the Philippines was jump off a cliff. Yet there I was, peering over the wooden plank before me and gazing down 50 feet at the deeply blue ocean below. It took 15 minutes to push myself this close to the edge, and I could hear the gentle but unbearable words of a Canadian man and his Chinese girlfriend telling me it looks worse than it really is. That I should "just do it."

Who the hell are these people? More importantly, how on earth did they convince me to sail out to this distant island and do this?!

We barely knew each other, after all. Conversation was often awkward. The Canadian guy didn't miss an opportunity to mention how much sex he'd had. The Chinese lady would get annoyed at seemingly inoffensive comments and enter periods of stone cold silence. It didn't seem to matter, though. The day before, we met on the sandy white beaches of Boracay, and without even realizing it we had hooked on to one another. Helmet diving. Cliff jumping. Drinking. I spent the better part of three days with these two: always trying to figure them out, always falling a little short, always grateful to have someone to share time with on the island.

The third night was when the Canadian guy told me how refreshing it was to meet people who didn't want to fuck either him or his girlfriend. At this point I started really questioning what it was that drew me to these two. How narcissistic was this guy? Or was he really just that insecure? Little did I know, the time to ask such questions had already passed. We were at a party, and the two started arguing. They went outside to escape the blaring music.

I never saw them again.

Top New IPs of 2011, Revisited

Top IPs of 2011 Revisited

Last year we tried to highlight a few original projects to keep an eye on amidst 2011's sea of trilogies and franchises. Rockstar was throwing out the much-hyped, gritty L.A. Noire, Goichi Suda and Shinji Mikami were re-teaming for the first time since 2005, and Fumito Ueda was supposed to finally unleash his first project in six years.

Unfortunately, some of our predictions were flat-out misfires as certain games didn't even come out! Ueda left Sony to strike out on his own, and The Last Guardian was pushed into 2012. He's still working on the title in a freelance capacity, but no new information has been revealed, and no new date has been set. Meanwhile, thatgamecompany's Journey was also pushed into 2012, as well as the Studio Ghibli–inspired Ni No Kuni (for non-Japanese audiences, at least). Similarly, despite a passionate attempt by North American fans to get their hands on Xenoblade, they were denied by Nintendo the entire year before finally being thrown an April 2012 release.

Not every title is going to meet its originally scheduled date, especially in an industry moving as fast as this one, but plenty of others managed to push through. Now that everyone is taking stock of their most memorable experiences, we thought it time to take a look back and see how the games we were originally excited for turned out.

A Failure to Kinect?

Posted June 15th 2011 by Jordan Mammo.

Between Nintendo stealing the E3 spotlight yet again and Sony revealing the surprisingly appealing (and competitively priced) PS Vita, it's been easy for people to disparage Microsoft for focusing so much on Kinect. Many have already dismissed motion-controlled gaming in its entirety, and never mind the strangely prevalent "if it's not aimed at me then Epic Fail" mindset that seems to grip the collective psyche of gamers every year at this time.
