XBLA Review - Deadlight

Posted August 16th 2012 by Anthony DiPalma.

With the slew of cookie-cutter zombie shooters out there, it's hard to tell which undead invasion is worth caring about. The survival-horror genre has seen better days, as modern day apocalyptic blitzkriegs tend to focus more on action, making it far too easy for players to blast their way through a horde of bloodthirsty freaks. Deadlight, however, is an entirely different animal. This Arcade title breaks the seemingly ongoing tradition of bumbling about in a methodical stroll through Drab-town by returning to the genre's roots, as well as introducing much needed new elements along the way.

Most Wanted - July

Posted July 4th 2012 by Anthony DiPalma.

Burgers, hot dogs, and chlorine. The sweet scents of summer have us craving for our air conditioners and videogames. What could be more American than supporting the ever-growing entertainment industry we know and love? This month, we've got some titles that will make JRPG fans squeal with excitement. Why not? Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, and more will be occupying our time in the same way the hippies are occupying Wall Street under the intense heat of the summer sun.

REVIEW - Game of Thrones

Posted June 15th 2012 by Anthony DiPalma.

There are times when a fictional universe in another medium can open up a whole realm of possibilities for gaming. Unfortunately, many licensed titles are rarely up-to-par with their film/comic/written counterparts. Yet there are, in fact, quite a few exceptions to this unwritten rule. When Cyanide Studios announced that they were working on a videogame based on the smash HBO series Game of Thrones, I was about as giddy as a drunken high school teenager on prom night. I'm a massive fanboy of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice & Fire series, so the awesome burden of reviewing Cyanide's Game of Thrones fell on my shoulders and was nestled in my arms like a newborn kitten made out of cotton candy.

Most Wanted - June

Posted June 2nd 2012 by Anthony DiPalma.

Game journalists often squeal like a thousand pigs getting dismembered in a slaughterhouse in the event that someone mentions the month of June. And why the hell not? We're a couple of days in already and OH YEAH E3 IS LIKE, MONDAY. Not a bad way to start the month, eh? Well providing "Mr. Caffeine" stays the hell away from the press conferences, everything should be hunky-dory. But what of the rest of the month? The Electronics Entertainment Expo only lasts for a few days, so how else are you going to pleasure your carnal passions for gaming? Luckily, we're here to help. (We're not going to touch you, though. Not after that last incident...)

FEATURE - Five Ways to Make A Great RPG

Posted May 22nd 2012 by Anthony DiPalma.

Even casual gamers know the impact that role-playing games have had on their favorite genres for years. Whether you're deciding to wield a sword or spell against a dragon in Skyrim or contemplating which sidearm you want to equip in Call of Duty, the fact is that players take on the role of a virtual entity; a carefully crafted identification of themselves and the decisions these characters make are based on the players' instincts. Lately, the industry has been seeing a growing trend in Sandbox RPGs, which are a sub-genre of traditional role-playing games that can be generally more user friendly. With the release of Capcom's Dragon's Dogma and the flood of medieval-fantasy games drowning the market in a sea of dwarves and magical wizards, it's hard to know what actually qualifies as a good RPG. Luckily, we're here to help with a short list of features that separate the amazing from the mediocre.

MOST WANTED May 2012

Posted May 2nd 2012 by Anthony DiPalma.

In 1862 (that's about 700 years ago), the Mexicans defeated the French in an unlikely, yet decisive victory in the Battle of Puebla. Every year since the Mexicans conquered the Cylons and saved the galaxy, celebrations were held in May to commemorate our brothers to the south. Our history may not be totally accurate, but our knowledge of the awesome games coming out this month are pretty on-point. Grab some Top Shelf Margs, pound some Coronas, and turn on your gaming system because May is going to be one hell of a month.

Posted April 9th 2012 by Anthony DiPalma.

PAX has been arguably one of the single greatest videogame conventions catered to the consumer since it began in 2004, and this year proved to be no different. PAX East 2012 was spread over the course of three days, beginning Friday, April 6th and ending on Sunday, April 8th. We decided to head over to the Boston Convention Center this weekend and check out the latest games coming out this year, as well as gain some insight from the developers who make them. Oh, and you can win some prizes by reading, too.
