Recap/Review - The Walking Dead S2E10

THREE FOR THREE. It's hard to imagine after the conga-line of missteps in the first half of season two, but The Walking Dead has been hitting the right targets consistently since it returned this year. In fact, it's getting better by the episode. Last night's episode, "18 Miles Out," was so solid that while live-tweeting the episode on the NerdMentality account, I struggled to think of anything to say other than "Holy shit!" and "Oh ya ya ya ya ya ya ya." We can only wait and see if the showrunners can maintain this momentum, but "18 Miles Out" is the best the series has had to offer since the premiere. Spoilers ahead.

RECAP/REVIEW The Walking Dead S2E7

Posted November 28th 2011 by J. Edison Thomas.

"Previously on The Walking Dead..." These wrap-up intros every week remind me of something I might have mentioned before starting this Walking Dead blog: I do not really like television.

Specifically, I don't like serial entertainment. Between actual advancement of the plot, there's so much minutia dropped in that may prove to be crucial, may prove to be padding, and may even require viewers to forget it to avoid contradictions with what happens later. I'm sure many viewers of this season of The Walking Dead can relate to the feeling that getting one story in seven episodes feels like buying a Transformer one robotic limb at a time. I sometimes wonder why people put up with this narrative style, or why it seems to flourish on cable television when it requires so much patience from its viewers. The reason, I have learned, is The Big Payoff. The slow boil. Just when you think nothing is going to happen... something happens! And it hits with the full weight of all that continuity. This is how it plays out in "Pretty Much Dead Already," the mid-season finale that has locked me in for the show's return in February. Just before broadcast, Talking Dead host Chris Hardwick (@nerdist) tweeted out this:

omgomgomgomg...just saw tonight's @WalkingDead_AMC...so amazing...Srsly, not just cuz I work for it...but DAMN. Watch it!

I was tempted to call bullshit (for the exact reason he cited) but no, he pretty well summed it up. Spoilers ahead.

TV RECAP/REVIEW The Walking Dead S2E4

Posted November 7th 2011 by J. Edison Thomas.

After a hum-dinger of a conclusion to the plotline of Carl's gunshot wound, the fourth episode of this season, "Cherokee Rose," was bound to be a catch-up episode that plants a lot of new plotlines rather than harvest the fruit of previously-grown ones. In fact, it was all but outright stated at the outset, as Herschel tells Rick and Shane that neither are in any condition to make progress on the Quest That Nobody Cares About, i.e. finding the lost Sophia. It was an ominous opener, but it did deliver on the promise to start plenty of new threads to follow for exciting new developments in the future. Unfortunately, save for exactly two scenes, you could miss this entire episode and simply catch up with "previously on..." segments and be none the poorer. So instead of recap all of the barely-anything that happened in this episode, I'll follow up on all the plot threads that are still dangling, where we are with them, and where I think they'll be going. Let me know if I miss any; spoilers after the jump.
