SOURCE CODE — Diablo II

Source Code — Diablo II

One does not simply play the Diablo series. It's more like being in a relationship—a one-sided relationship where one person is flighty and non-committal and the other is always forgiving and welcoming. Think of it like old girlfriend you "hate" that immediately calls you every time a guy breaks up with her. The key here is, in this relationship, you are the evil ex and Diablo will always be there to pick up the phone. Staying power and almost infinite replayability are factors that make Diablo II one of the best games of all time, computer-based or otherwise. And with Diablo III finally releasing fans from over a decade's worth of digital vasocongestion, there's no better time to look back and reflect upon how amazing a game Diablo II was and still is to me.

IMPRESSIONS — Phantasy Star Online 2 Beta

Posted May 16th 2012 by Oliver Chen.

Phantasy Star Online Beta Impressions

While I missed the boat on the original Phantasy Star Online for Dreamcast when it released over a decade ago, I played preposterous amounts of the later three Episodes on the GameCube and PC. The novelty of a "true" action MMORPG and an addicting rare loot system was fair incentive for me to spend hundreds of hours grinding across Ragol with friends both online and offline. Imagine my disappointment a few years later when I played Phantasy Star Universe, the next major Phantasy Star title, and discovered that most of that great PSO gameplay had been almost completely eviscerated. It could have totally passed as completely different series if not for a few trademark IPs present in the game.

Thankfully, Sonic Team realized they had blundered and began incorporating more and more of Phantasy Star Online's gameplay back into the subsequent spinoff titles on the DS and PSP. Some fans even joked that the next game might as well be "Phantasy Star Online 2" if the trend were to continue. Imagine their surprise when, at an event celebrating the tenth anniversary of the series, Sega announced a true sequel to PSO.

I recently had the opportunity to play in the Japanese closed beta for Phantasy Star Online 2 on the PC, and after about a week of playtime I can say that PSO2 more than lives up its predecessor's name. Not only does the game evoke ridiculous amounts of nostalgia for the original PSO, it also cherry-picks the best gameplay enhancements introduced in the Universe games while adding a plethora of features new to the franchise. Could this game end up being the best action MMORPG gaming has to offer when it releases later this year? More than likely, I would say.

BOOK REVIEW - Diablo III: Book of Cain

Posted January 23rd 2012 by Frankie Aguilar.

Now, before any of you start Googling my address in order to come steal my advanced copy of Diablo III, understand that this is indeed a book review. Yes, another book review on a gaming site. But this is no ordinary codex, as a matter of fact this is one of the most badass pieces of gaming literature I've ever had the pleasure of getting my hands on. The Book of Cain is an encyclopedic analysis of the world of Sanctuary in which the Diablo series takes place. It chronicles heavenly and hellish forces' eternal battle for humanity, the origins of man, and so much more. Although this book was technically written by veteran novelist Flint Dille, you can be certain this book will echo subconsciously with the grizzled dictations of Deckard Cain himself.

XBOX 360 REVIEW - Sonic Generations

Posted November 10th 2011 by Adam Grayson.

Oh, Sonic, Sonic, Sonic...  How long has it been since you had a good game?  I suppose that answer will vary depending on how much individual Sonic fans are willing to forgive, but the general consensus is that it's been far too long.  I myself am a huge Sonic fan despite being a die-hard Nintendo fanboy.  While other kids were reading comics about some lame guys in tights called Superman, Batman, and Spider-Man, I was busy reading up on the blue rodent with an attitude and an appetite for chili dogs.  Despite my love for Sonic, playing Sonic and the Secret Rings for the Wii felt like each member of Sonic Team coming up to me one by one and slapping me in the face and spitting in my eye.  Needless to say, that game completely turned me off of the franchise I once adored (at the time I didn't have a 360 or PS3 for that Sonic the Hedgehog to do it for me).  Praise the gaming gods for Sonic Generations!  Ever since its first trailer, the game has looked great, but fans (myself included) remained understandably skeptical.  Now that the game is out, and I've spent countless hours with it, I am very pleased to say that Sonic Generations broke the curse of the Sonic Cycle and is the best Sonic game I have played in a long time.

Battlefield 3 Beta Impressions

Posted October 3rd 2011 by Oliver Chen.

As I traversed an open plain in Caspian Border from the gunner seat of a VDV Buggy, I managed to lose myself in the moment. The roar of engines deafened the skies as two jets flew past overhead and an enemy helicopter razed an unfortunate group of soldiers to the left. A tank accompanied by a squad of soldiers came into view ahead, and I harassed the troops while my driver took a hard right to narrowly avoid a tank shell. The horizon looked endless, and in that instant I suddenly felt like anything could happen. This realization that you are part of a conflict bigger than yourself, that there are more things happening around you than you can imagine, can only be described as a "Battlefield Moment."

Skyrim -Thar Be Dragons!

Posted June 10th 2011 by Anthony DiPalma.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has dragons. Lots of them. No matter where, when, or how you grew up, it was always a common childhood fantasy to slay a dragon. If you weren't dreaming of slaying a dragon or training to become a Super Saiyan, then you were probably playing with an Easy-Bake Oven and have moved on to playing Cooking Mama. As for boys who would later become men, Bethesda's newest little bundle of joy promises to fulfill these testosterone infused fantasies of dragon slaying. An entirely new world built an an entirely new engine, along with vast gameplay improvements makes Skyrim an experience to look forward to. Also, did I mention Skyrim has dragons?

PC REVIEW - Worms Reloaded

Posted September 28th 2010 by J. Edison Thomas.

My love for the Worms series has been well documented on this website. In this article I go into extensive detail on my history with the Worms 2 demo whose single free level gave me more entertainment than any $60 title from the HD generation. More recently, in our 9th podcast I discuss the game again, in the context of describing this game I'm attempting to describe right now, Worms Reloaded. I had kind of hoped that discussing the game on the podcast would satisfy any obligations I had to review the game, seeing as it was a review copy that I had specifically requested. But when the PR man came knocking asking about the review, I didn't have the heart to send him to our sophomoric podcast to chisel out the Worms Reloaded coverage from the giant marble slab of phallic innuendo and nasally guffaws. So I wrote this thing, which -- as you will soon come to find out -- isn't much better at all.

Developer of Torchlight Sport Epic Customer Service

Posted October 16th 2009 by Adam Glasgow.

Runic Games, a development house composed by the creators of Fate and Diablo have gained some attention recently, and not just because their new PC game Torchlight comes out in ten days. This last Sunday a single user on the Torchlight forum inquired if the in-game camera shake effects could be turned off, as the user suffers from a medical condition that would cause this to make the game unplayable.
