DS Review - Dementium II

Posted May 4th 2010 by Jacob Barnes.

A lot of people don't look at the DS as a venue for horror games.  Sure, I've been horrified by some of the free games I've reviewed for this site, but not in a good way.  Dementium II delivers survival horror in a good fashion and, at the same time, cleans up some problems experienced in its predecessor, Dementium: The Ward.

More Nintendo DS Redesign Rumors

Posted February 21st 2010 by Jacob Barnes.

The Nintendo DSi LL/XL came to Japan just a few months ago (not even out yet in North America) and there are already rumors of a new iteration of the handheld flying around.  brokemycontroller.com went through a Nintendo patent application that details a type of vibrating game system.  The vibrations vary from small to large in relation to player's actions in the game, then travel through a "stick" or stylus to the player's hand.  Other vague rumors from unnamed developers say it may have a tilt function and that the Pokémon Company already has new dev kits for the system.  If such a system exists, it's likely Nintendo will reveal it around E3 time, and for the sake of not getting ahead of themselves, I hope it comes a little later.

DS Review: PDC World Championship Darts

Posted September 27th 2009 by Jacob Barnes.

PDC World Championship Darts

Who doesn't enjoy a good game of darts? I'm not an expert on the sport, but the concept of aiming a small, sharp object at a tiny point seems simple and fun for many people. The developers of PDC World Championship Darts attempt to make an accurate version of this biggest PDC tournament. So can a platform like the Nintendo DS successfully recreate such an experience?

DS REVIEW: Hysteria Hospital: Emergency Ward

Posted September 5th 2009 by Jacob Barnes.

Today we're going to take a look into the not-so-distant future. Before us lies a small, roofless hospital in rural Tennessee. Under Obama's new Islamo-socialist healthcare plan, there are now only seven hospitals in the U.S., and people soon flood the hospital lobby every few seconds. Our first patient has an ailment that requires a CAT scan, which is unfortunate because the hospital doesn't have enough funds to cover such equipment. We proceed to drag the patient back to the waiting room and tell her to go screw herself. It's not like it matters anyway; we only need to treat ten today to complete our shift. I bet you're wishing you listened to Glenn Beck when you had the chance.

DS PREVIEW - I Heart Geeks

Posted September 2nd 2009 by Adrian DeHerrera.

One of the coolest things about Wile E. Coyote is that not only is he an eternal optimist (seriously, how many times can you epically fail and keep coming back for more?), but he has a dedicated knack for making complicated contraptions to catch the roadrunner. A well placed arrow can hit a bullseye causing a match to light which ignites a rocket that explodes against a giant boulder, causing it to careen off a cliff – usually to the bone crushing tragedy of our brilliant but unlucky coyote friend. Although the results were always predictable, the coolness of the physics in the elaborate setups was undeniable. The basic premise of I Heart Geeks is similar to the elaborate setups constructed by Wile E. Coyote, with more real-life physics and a lot less Satan-approved roadrunners.

Nintendo's Demo Play Coming to Handhelds

Posted July 7th 2009 by Jordan Mammo.

Just in case you were worried that Wii owners would be the only ones who'd be able to experience the joy of having a videogame play itself, Nintendo is making sure everyone with a DS doesn't feel left out. Japan's Nikkei newspaper reported today that Nintendo's newly-patented Demo Play feature will be making its way into some handheld titles for the DS and DSi, specifically mentioning "high speed action games."

EA Announces MySims Agents

Posted April 24th 2009 by Jacob Barnes.

In a continuing effort to take over all genres of the video game industry, EA has announced the newest MySims game, titled MySims AgentsMySims Agents will still retain the charm of the previous titles, while allowing players to solve puzzles via computer hacking and forensics.  I don't know how well all of these elements will mesh, but at least the younger audience can get a taste of secret agent games without parents having to worry.  Check out the full press release after the break.

REVIEW: Rhythm Heaven

Posted April 21st 2009 by Jacob Barnes.

The Nintendo DS is home to a heap of rhythm and music games such as Electroplankton, Drum Master and the Ouendan/Elite Beat Agent series. It's no surprise to see creative rhythm games like these when smart developers use the stylus in a way that is not just for navigating through menus. Unfortunately for fans of the genre like myself, we don't see nearly enough of these games localized outside of Japan. So after the two plus year wait, the DS version of Rhythm Heaven came as a welcome addition to my collection after hearing of the popularity of the series in Japanese arcades and the Game Boy Advance.

Sega Announces Puyo Puyo 7

Posted April 2nd 2009 by kino.

The latest issue of Famitsu lifted the veil on Sega's Project Ringo. Turns out Ringo is the latest installment in the long running Puyo Puyo puzzle franchise. We don't know much about what to expect yet, but Puyo Puyo 7 is certain to come packed with lots of fever-like modes and extras, when it hits Nintendo DS, Wii and PSP. Famitsu has already confirmed online multiplayer, which is bound to become a big part of the game, given the franchise's competitive orientation.

Personally, while I like me some Puyo Puyo crazy comboing alright, I'd also have loved for Project Ringo to be something totally new and different, ą la Yuji Naka's Let's Tap for example.

The DS version of the game will be released on July 30, while the other versions will have to wait for a cryptic Winter '09. Sega's official site is still teasing the announcement as of this writing, but we can expect a more official unveiling this friday. Mini Flash teaser embedded after the break for maths afficionados.
