MOVIE REVIEW - The Dark Knight Rises

Posted July 26th 2012 by Frankie Aguilar.

We've all known since the end of The Dark Knight that the Batman story, at least Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale's version, would be coming to an end. So the anticipation of resolution to four years worth of fan speculation is basically a stent put in place to protect against the hemorrhage that'll result from the ending. For many people, this version of Batman is the only Batman they know, and not just from an age standpoint, but in aversion to the Schumacher debacles or the inspired Burton flicks. This is their trilogy. This Batman feels real and rooted in a world close to ours and to think that not only is this the last time we'll experience him this way but that Warner Bros and DC are already planning a reboot feels like bringing your new fiance to your wife's funeral. Nostalgic nonsense aside, you must be wondering how this movie ended up, so here we go.

REVIEW The Avengers

Posted May 4th 2012 by Frankie Aguilar.

Review The Avengers

Do you remember when you were little and you came out of movies mimicking the hero you just watched? Maybe you play fought your little brother with phantom lightsabers or pretended to fly like Superman. That feeling of elation, that inability to verbalize the awesomeness of what you'd just seen, leading you to act like a fool, is what I felt coming out of The Avengers. I was hyped, stoked, whatever hip adjective for happy you can come up with. I was happy because I felt like everything that led up to this movie wasn't in vain, that my fandom and faith were rewarded. And on top of all that, The Avengers is just great.

Review - Tough Sh*t by Kevin Smith (Enhanced Edition)

Posted March 27th 2012 by Frankie Aguilar.

Tough Sh*t, the latest book by nerd legend Kevin Smith has been on book shelves for about a week now. As you saw in my review of the aforementioned novel, I found the book hilarious in its vulgarity and very enjoyable. I was lucky enough to have had the privilege of reading this tome in print, a seemingly dying art form, but since we live in the digital age we now have the ability to read books in a digital format; a medium that Kevin Smith and crew sought to utilize with their enhanced digital reader edition of Tough Sh*t.

REVIEW Tough Sh*t by Kevin Smith

Posted March 14th 2012 by Frankie Aguilar.

Book Review - Tough Sh*t by Kevin Smith

For anyone unfamiliar with Kevin Smith, hearing him speak or reading anything written by him for the first time can be a jarring experience. Mr. Smith is a curt and unfiltered gentleman, prone to penis metaphors and graphic, if not romantic, depictions of his wife's nether regions. At the end of the day, above all else, the dude is honest. There may not be a more transparent "celebrity" in the realm of public awareness. And that transparency, along with foul-mouthed philosophy, is on display in his latest book, the quasi-advice tome: Tough Sh*t. Equal parts salient memoir, stream of consciousness and nerd success blueprint, the book is quintessential Kevin Smith. Filled to the bindings with anecdotal evidence of his rise from New Jersey–bred obscurity through the ranks of the indie movie zeitgeist, Smith is here to let you know that it wasn't easy: it was tough shit.

The Fandom's Menace

Posted February 9th 2012 by Frankie Aguilar.

The Fandom Menace

It's difficult to get a grasp on the cavalcade of emotions that I feel for a man I've never met. George Lucas single-handedly defined my childhood rise to geekdom and has since set out to destroy the mental shrine I've built to him. Lucas is a name that is still championed by so many, but is so loudly and histrionically vilified that you'd think he was a terrorist leader. So the folks that wish the plaid-shirted, bespectacled dictator would just end his film making career will be happy to know that after his latest film, Red Tails, he'll be riding off into the binary sunset, probably on a Dewback, towards the land of independent personal films. But not before one last twist of the Prequel-poisoned Star Wars dagger in the back of fans. That's right people, Lucas is bringing back every single movie from the series, starting with The Phantom Menace, in gloriously unnecessary 3D. And every movie ticket comes with a pack a cyanide-laced Twizzlers to enhance your 3D movie experience.
