2005 NFL Playoffs: Road to the SuperBowl
Eh, I figured I'd go ahead and start a new thread with the start of the playoffs. Now that the Regular Season is over, we've got all the information we need.

---------
2004-2005 Season Rankings
32. San Francisco 49ers (2-14)
31. Miami Dolphins (4-12)
30. Cleveland Browns (4-12)
29. Chicago Bears (5-11)
28. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (5-11)
27. Tenessee Titans (5-11)
26. Oakland Raiders (5-11)
25. Arizona Cardinals (6-10)
24. Washington Redskins (6-10)
23. Detroit Lions (6-10)
22. Dallas Cowboys (6-10)
21. New York Giants (6-10)
20. Houston Texans (7-9)
19. Carolina Panthers (7-9)
18. Kansas City Chiefs (7-9)
17. New Orleans Saints (8-8)
16. Cincinnati Bengals (8-8)
15. Buffalo Bills (9-7)
14. Jacksonville Jaguars (9-7)
13. Baltimore Ravens (9-7)
12. Seattle Seahawks (9-8)
11. Minnesota Vikings (9-9)
10. St. Louis Rams (9-9)
09. Green Bay Packers (10-7)
08. Denver Broncos (9-8)
07. New York Jets (11-7)
06. San Diego Chargers (12-5)
05. Atlanta Falcons (12-6)
04. Indianapolis Colts (13-5)
03. Pittsburgh Steelers (16-2)
---------

This listing, of course, will be the selection ranking for the 2005 NFL Draft with two exceptions. The Giants traded away their First Round pick to the San Diego Chargers for Eli last year, and the Bills also gave their First Round pick up to Dallas.

With the established rankings out of the way, let's get to the Playoff Bracket and this weekend's schedule.

Most noteworthy, however, is definitely the Colts-Broncos matchup because this is the second year in a row that the two will face each other on Wildcard Weekend. Not only that, but last weekend the Colts and the Broncos just played each other. Indy was resting players for the playoffs, and Denver won, 33-14, clinching its Wildcard slot.

Yeah, they played the last regular season game too, but in Indy. As this year, Broncos won that game to earn their wildcard spot.

As for the games, I'll take the Rams over the Seahawks. Seattle has been playing flat against the Rams all year, and now Shaun Alexander is whining about a personal record and may not return next year (as he'll be a free agent). They have the talent, they just find a way to lose late.

I want Minnesota over Green Bay, there's a chance besides the fact that the Vikings have lost 7 of their last 10 games. If they decide NOT to throw big blitzes at Farve late in the game (which allowed two game-winning field goals in games against them this year) they'll be in it.

I like the Colts over Denver. The AFC title game with Indy was the reason for the '5-yard chuck rule' emphasis this season, so if the Bronco DBs want to play rough, it will not be their day...

And I can't see the Jets winning in San Diego. Chad Pennington and his rotator cuff issues may make for a very ugly game for New York. But if the Bolts couldn't beat the Colts, I doubt they'd match up well against Pittsburgh or New England.

The Broncos didn't play the Colts last year in Week 17. They played the Packers. They played the Colts in Week 16 and beat them up pretty well, but then they rested all their players, the Packers crushed them. A week later, they were sluggish and the Colts raped them.

Or were you talking about this year?

The seahawks are my pick for most disspointing team of the year. I really expected them to be great... not for them to win theiere (pitiful) division with a 9-7 record. I'm still rooting for them to win the NFC though.

HOLY MOTHER ****ING MOTHER ****ER. Why do the jets have to give me a ****ing herat attack every week??? I was gonna track down Barton and personally kill ihm myself. He's ****ing lucky the rookie choked.

We should have had that game won without that overtime bull****. A few mistakes, and all of a sudden the chargers make it seem as thought they were actually IN the game. We pretty well dominated.

Now to lose to the pats/pit next week... but you never know Smile

Woah you mean the Chargers lost? I turned it on when it was 17 to like 7 and I couldn't believe it was the Chargers losing. But I didn't watch anymore, Iron Chef you see. If they are out that's great, gives the Colts an even better chance.

The Packers and Vikings game will be the one I really want to see, even though the Colts are my favorite team I have little doubt they will lose. Which ever of these teams loses is out right?

Woah, woah. What was the "disgusting move" by Randy Moss on his second touchdown catch? I looked away after the touchdown and they commentator is like, "Oh that's a disgusting move by Randy Moss it's a shame we have that on Live TV." And I looked back but had missed it.

Anybody catch it? It was the touchdown that got them up to 31.

He fake mooned the crowd and rubbed his ass up and down the goal post.

It was uncalled for, but I don't know about "the most disgusting move" in Joe's commentating career. He didn't actually moon the crowd.

The Divisional Playoffs

Saturday, Jan. 15 @ 4:30 p.m. on CBS
New York Jets at Pittsburgh Steelers

Saturday, Jan. 15 @ 8:00 p.m. on FOX
St. Louis Rams at Atlanta Falcons

Sunday, Jan. 16 @ 1:00 p.m. on FOX
Minnesota Vikings at Philadelphia Eagles

Sunday, Jan. 16 @ 4:30 p.m. on CBS
Indianapolis Colts at New England Patriots

My picks for next week are in bold. This week I was 2-2. I'm still undecided on Vikings-Eagles though. Right now, I'm leaning Eagles.

It was un-called for, taunting, but it wasn't that disgusting. Moss was just really unsportsmanlike. Now on the otherhand, Burleson's dance was cute. Randy should take after him.

I think it was more like one of those things where the last straw breaks the camel's back. They were pissed because he blamed "the media" for blowing his walk off out of proportion.

It's a trail of abuses on Moss' part that, in the end, will make the memories of his career all about his stunts and not about his stats. That's a shame, but he deserves it. He's a prick the likes of which we haven't seen since Michael Irvin, and at least Michael Irvin is a nice guy.

Randy's actions were not any worse than any other endzone celebration. It was for less than a few seconds, and even Tony Dungy defended Moss (who was very critical for the risque Monday Night Football skit with TO). He said that after games in which the visiting team wins, Packer fans moon the players as they are walking out to the team bus.

yo nenned, they were tough field goals. 40 yarders aren't easy in really cold weather. Plus, the guy sucks anyways. I remember a game where he missed 2 PAT's

Vinatieri would've made both of them, though.

I'll give him the first one; what was it, 47 yards??? He isn't the strongest legged kicker, and throw in the Heinz Field factor and a lot of people may have mised it. But you can't miss the second one, that's just disgusting.

It's a shame, cause the JETS should've won. Atleast Big Ben was exposed for the rookie he is. Hopefully someone with a decent kicker can finish the job next week

Well, the one advantage to the brackets finishing chalk is that the championship games will both feature the top seeds versus the second seeds.

I'm 5-3 thus far in my playoff picks. Next week, I'm going purely on who I want to win since both matchups should be excellent and are really up for grabs: Atlanta and Pittsburgh.

I call it beautiful irony. The Jets beat the Chargers last weekend because Kaeding misses the field goal that would win the game, so Brien (was it?) decided to be dramatic and miss two field goals just to show what a creative guy he is. But, I'm a Steelers fan, so I'll take what they throw me.

thegamedevil666

You make it sound like Roethlisberger isn't a good QB. I'll remind you that he's 14-0 as a starter. People forget that he's a rookie because of what he has done (his passing yards per completion is 8.9 -- second only to the NFL record-setting Peyton Manning this season), so they expect him to play like a veteran. He played like he was "supposed to play" yesterday. He's only the second rookie QB to ever win a playoff game.

Playoff football is different from regular season football -- much faster, much harder. Roethlisberger got lucky that he lived to see another day after that. Now that he's experienced just what playoff football is all about, I expect him to play better against the Patriots next weekend. The Steelers are still a powerful team (that's why they went 15-1). Their defense came to play yesterday allowing only 3 points (special teams was a let-down, as well as was Big Ben's passing). The Jets have shown that they can shut down the Steelers passing game -- they're the only team who has expressed that ability. Of course, the game was a lot closer what with Jerome Bettis' very uncharacteristic fumble he made.

I think that the Steelers will beat the Patriots next weekend, personally. Of course, I've always picked them to win throughout the season (I'm a fan, sure, but, hey, that makes for sixteen times I was right on that point). All of the commentators talk about how the Patriots lost on Halloween to the Steelers because Corey Dillon didn't play... I think that they forget not only that the Steelers didn't have all of their starters on defense (they suffered a lot of injuries during the year), but they've remained the number one defense, not only overall, but specifically against the run. The Steelers kept Curtis Martin -- the number one RB of the season -- to 77 yards on 19 carries. I think that Corey Dillon will be better contained than that.

I expect the Steelers offense to play like they usually do against non-Jets teams and make it to the Super Bowl. The reason that Patriots had such stunning success against the best offense in the NFL is not because of the Patriots defense so much as it was the Patriots offense and ground attack. The Colts have a very weak defense and the Patriots exploited that with very long and tedious drives that kept Peyton Manning on the sideline in the cold weather. It didn't help that his WRs refused to catch the passes that hit their hands.

As far as the NFC goes, I don't really pay it too much mind. I don't think that an NFC team will win the Super Bowl anyway. As the Falcons play the Eagles, I still don't regard the Eagles as a Super Bowl caliber team. Without Terrell Owens, the team is much less dynamic. Ask the Vikings if that's true? The Vikings were 8-8 through the regular season with an underwhelming and very streaky team. Any team can beat the Vikings, any team can be beat by the Vikings. They're so inconsistent you never know how to take them. They went on a cold slide (as they have shown the propensity to do) and they crumbled. The Falcons are very one-dimensional with Michael Vick. He's a great athlete, but not a great QB. He's tremendously explosive -- with his legs. I think that the Falcons rise up over the Eagles and go to the Super Bowl, only to be crushed by either the Steelers dominating defense or by the Patriots reliable defense (both are ranked in the upper percentile).

I guess that's all I've got to say on this... As far as making picks is concerned, I've done it the entire season and post-season so far with my family. I'll have to look up what the final standings were, but (in the regular season) everyone here did a fantastic job. In fact, only my sister (who only picks animal teams to win) didn't beat all of the commentators who also make picks throughout the year. She did beat one of them, interestingly enough, despite having a very ridiculous method of selection.

Go Pats! I would like to see Brady win another one, if only because he is completely underrated. I wouldn't mind if the Falcons won, though.

EEK! Wait!! Do we actually... agree... on something??

Anyway, the 2nd half of Pats/Colts was just complete domination. I can't remember seeing a more perfectly played quarter in Playoff history. If someone can think of any better, please let me know. Ripe for the pickings my ass, Vanderjerk. And can we all agree now that Brady > Manning?

...and... what the hell is that supposed to mean?

It means what a lame and terrible performance by the Colts.
