So far, so good. My kids do what I ask them to do because they respect me without having to be beaten, screamed at or put down. Reason for this? I treat them with the respect that I never received as a kid.

On a side note, listening to that phone call reminded me all too well of the shitty parenting that unfortunately does go on in the world and I'm so unbelievably thankful that that cycle has been broken for my own children.

I think it's just a cultural difference. Quite frankly, white people have a vastly different way of parenting than Latinos/Blacks. That's just the way it is (so don't give me that OMG racist BS). To me, and I imagine the vast majority of black people, what Alec did on this recording is pretty much normal. And I just don't understand how non-colored people get their children to behave without some kind of physical/emotional threat (emo threats equate to something like spanking the kid at school, which I witnessed several times in elementary). My mom tried to do that back in the day (taking away video games, taking away TV), and I just did it anyway. She'd say shit like, "No video games!" and then hide them, and I'd just go and find the N64 and continue playing until she found out.

And grounding? Don't get me started. I'd just leave the house. I don't understand how kids above the age of 14 are controled by their parents by "grounding". Like...what's stopping me from leaving? My mom doesn't ground because she'd know it'd be pointless for me. Pretty much right now, I can do whatever I want and my parents will say "hey, it's your future". And that's a pretty good deal I think.

I guess most kids listen to their parents out of respect. You know, that thing most people would have for people who raised them from a child and had a large part of why you ended up as you are? Yeah, that stuff.

We're not talking about my childhood, my childhood was slightly fucked up. That's not the reference point I'm using though, I have stepbrothers and friends, their parents have never spanked them, they just got "talked to" and they ended up going to juvie for blowing a public toilet in a park up with an m80 and had several behavioral problems. They never listen to their parent(s). And as far as I know their parent(s) treated them with nothing but respect and love their whole life.

Spanking past a certain age is wrong I understand that. But to never get angry at child for being a shithead and not respecting the parent, which I'm pretty sure Mr. Baldwin will just have a "talking to" or at most a "you're grounded" as a punishment to his daughter, then you must be a saint. I'm 100% sure both you and Daisy have at least snapped on your kid at least once and said or done things you thought you'd never do.

And if Mr. Baldwin is hitting his kid, we'll eventually find out, and he's a cock for doing it. But as far as we know, he just left a nasty message.

I think that blacks and maybe Latinos (though I'm not Latino so I have little expiriance in this area) generally don't find it a priority to move up the social hierarchy. Not that we are incapable of doing so, just that culturally, we don't think it's as big a deal as other cultures.

Mate, that's utter bullshit. Poverty and a lack of strong role models are the reason for people not moving socially. Not culture that prevent people from moving up the socially. The African kids in my secondary school were mostly middle class and our parents all grilled in us the value of an education. The Ghanian and Nigerian kids were all pretty hard working because we all realised the value of an education and in my year the Nigerian kids were the best performing minority. So don't give me shit about black people not having the drive to move up socially.

The people that come from Africa aren't African Americas, which is what I was referring to when I made the statement.

It's more about just being content with the world. In other words, success in the black community in America is to be at peace with one's self. I think you're overgeneralizing and being somewhat racist. Not all or even most white people have some inert drive to get to the top of the corporate ladder and become rich and powerful. It's a tiny percent of people (of all colors) that have the ability and will to do that. More white people make it because more of them have the ability to get to that point. (and it's a whole different argument about why black people are less able, whether it's a racist society keeping the black man down or whatever, different subject)
