Will someone PLEASE explain this to me OK, I'm not trying to cheat or find any answers, I just can't find any sort of website that covers the following two topics:Abiotic/Biotic Factors Mean, Median, and Mode Standard Deviation With any search, all I find are lesson plans for teachers. Not even Wikipedia is helping out at all... I do understand Mean Median and Mode... through math. But this is science. Where the hell do I apply this here? Abiotic and Biotic factors are living and dead mass... right? I can't remember this crap, it was from like sixth grade... Damit all to hell! This class is Field Biology, btw. A college class, obviously showing me I have no place in college. Maybe things will change... You can be as blunt as you want, because I'm pretty sure I have learned this stuff somewhere before - just, I dunno, it's been a few years and it's not so fresh to me. Cookies WILL go around for contributions! Please, help a fat man out here. I might lose five pounds as a reward for you guys! |

in a nutshell, standard deviation is what tells you the likeliness you'll find results near the average mean. if your numbers are like 3 5 6 6 7 7 7 7 8 8 8 9, the standard deviation will be small because most numbes fall around 7. if your numbers are 1 2 3 4 5 6 6 7 8 9 10 10 11, the deviation will be larger because the the numbers are more evenly spaced out, and your chance at hitting a number near the average is lower. um abiotic factors of what? life? precipitation, sun, water, minerals present, stuff like that are abiotic factors of an environment. Predation, food source, vegetation, anything organic that affects conditions of an ecosystem, is a biotic factor. I guess, it's been a long time since I've see that too. I don't know what you're looking for. |

I'm going to try and pin point this standard deviation with science... So, let's say, with your example, 3 5 6 6 7 7 7 7 8 8 8 9... this is the average lifespan of a racoon - around seven years. So... with your example and me trying to put field biology (my class) into it, the deviation would turn out to be the standard lifespan of a racoon, that would be around seven years. Sometimes eight, sometimes six... I know that's not the average life span of a racoon but I'm just trying to fit math with science here. And I guess it is life when it comes to abiotic factors. Man I need to go back to elementary school. Do they honestly think I'd remember that **** for so long? |

I think two standard deviations works out to be about 68% of results, meaning 66% of results lie between [average - standard deviation] and [average + standard deviation]. so if the average age of a racoon is 7 years, and the SD is 1.2 (random numbers I made up, not in real life or in my previous example), then 68% of racoons should die between the age of 5.8 and 8.2. Similarly, 95% will die within 4 deviations - (average - 2xSD) to (average + 2xSD). For our racoons, 4.6 years and 9.4 years. |

I remember doing this stuff when i was about 16/17, i hated learning about the degrees of freedom stuff, standard deviation **** and i am not particularly good at it. But for the biotic factors aren't you just supposed to talk about things like predators, sources of food, disease etc etc for biotic factors and then for abioitic factors to talk about things like the environment such as sunlight, sources of shelter and weather for abiotic factors? |

Abiotic factors are non-living physical and chemical factors which affect the ability of organisms to survive and reproduce. Biotic factors are living things or their materials that directly or indirectly affect an organism in its environment. Abiotic examples: light intensity, temperature range, type of soil or rock, pH level, water availability, dissolved gases, level of pollutants. Biotic examples: parasitism, disease, predation hope this helps ___________________

It's good to know that I can leave for a year, and STILL retain my title as the smartest person on this entire board. Threads like this continue to add evidence and credibility to my title. ___________________ |
