'YOU BELONG IN HELL'
Kearny High preacher teacher uses classroom to condemn non-Christians
Wednesday, November 15, 2006
By KEN THORBOURNE
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

KEARNY - A Kearny High School student has accused a history teacher of crossing the line between teaching and preaching - and he's got the tapes to prove it.

Sixteen-year-old junior Matthew LaClair says he was shocked when history teacher David Paszkiewicz, who is also a Baptist preacher in town, spent the first week lecturing students more about Heaven and Hell than the colonies and Constitution.

"I would never have suspected something like this went on in a public school," LaClair said yesterday.

He said Paszkiewicz told students that if they didn't accept Jesus, "you belong in Hell." He also dismissed as unscientific the theories of evolution and the "Big Bang."

Paszkiewicz, a teacher at the high school since 1992, didn't return phone messages left for him at the high school; school principal Al Somma declined to comment.

But Superintendent of Schools Robert Mooney, who called Paszkiewicz "a wonderful teacher," said he was aware of the issues raised by LaClair - and the recordings - and said "corrective action" would be taken. But he refused to say what the "corrective action" would consist of or when it would take place.

As of yesterday, Paszkiewicz hasn't been disciplined in any way and continues to teach his class, Mooney said. In fact, LaClair says he's still in the class and that he's received good grades so far this year.

LaClair, who described his own religious views as "non-Christian," said he wanted to complain about Paszkiewicz to school administrators, but feared his teacher would deny the charges and that no one would believe a student's word against a teacher's. So he started taping Paszkiewicz in class.

"If I didn't have those CDs everything would have been dismissed," LaClair said.

On Oct. 10 - a month after he first requested a meeting with the principal - LaClair met with Paszkiewicz, Somma and the head of social studies department.

At first Paszkiewicz denied he mixed in religion with his history lesson and the adults in the room appeared to be buying it, LaClair said. But then LaClair reached into his backpack and produced the CDs.

At that point Paszkiewicz remarked, according to LaClair, "Maybe you're an atheist. You caught the big Christian fish."

"I don't hate this man," LaClair said yesterday. "But if you're going to preach your religion in a public school ... and lying in a meeting about it, then I think he must have some problem he can't deal with in a public school."

I'd say fire his ass. Public school is not a place to preach then lie about preaching. Doesn't it seem like a conflict of interest for a Minister to be a teacher at a public school?

lol I'm in Kearny right now. Surprisingly nice for being so close to Newark.

The way I look at it, this lying jerk deserves our tax dollars just as much as the other lying jerks who work in public schools. As in, not at all. So cut funding. To all of them.

I don't know if that's the answer, but in the meantime, I'm all for ruthlessly gutting the current public education system.

So just sorta pull the plug on education funding and hope for the best? Sounds like the prequel to Mad Max.

vouchers. let people choose between private education and public education. if people leave public schools in droves, which they would, theyd be forced to improve.

I don't love public education but I trust homeschooling even less. No offense you came out pretty good if not a bit overly catholic.

And why exactly do you not "trust" homeschooling? Because it doesn't turn kids into raging liberals? Because parents are just trying to protect their children from God-knows-what?

And believe me, the watered-down curriculum isn't really doing any good.

Jared and I spent the day at my son's kindergarten last week and all I can say is at the end of this school year he will have to start attending a private or Catholic school (they are full atm). Everything from the curriculm, to the stupid teachers, to the ****ty food, none of it was even up to par to what I think a school should have. It was disgusting and sad, and to top it all off, it's one of the better public schools in town. At first I thought I was just being spoiled, since I did go to private and Catholic schools just about my entire life, but Jared said it was nearly identical to the schools he went to as a kid when he went to public schools. So private ftw because public is downright atrocious here.

You know, for being a superpower and all that jazz, we certainly don't seem to care about the future generations that will be running this country.

Oh yeah, the teacher shouldn't have told his students they were going to hell.

Its the sad truth. What else is sad is that public (and I'm sure private schools too) spend useless amounts of money on the gym equipment and sports. Physical Education is the biggest plot of bull**** I've ever seen, and whats worse is that most of the money schools make go to them.

I do not think i will ever be able to understand why conservatives despise state funded schools so much. I personally am grateful i spent 7 years in an all boys catholic secondary school and the government funds faith based schools.

I dont want to learn about religion or any of that, I just want public education to be better for everyones' sake. I dont want some kid that thinks he's black with a guttermouth and the intelligence of a three year old running my country.

I think that High schools at the public level are amazing. All of my teachers were great, and the overall experience was well worth any little things such as food (which you don't even have to eat). Then again I did take only AP and Honors classes, so maybe that's why my teachers were good Thinking

Perhaps there's the problem to begin with, you elect conservatives who cut public school funding, who as a result experience a loss of quality, and not the other way around.

In my country, public and private schools are both state sponsored, meaning, the schools receive money to pay the teachers, the teaching material, costs like heating and electricity, all based on the number of students of course, the main difference is not a difference in quality (if there's a difference it's between the quality of the Dutch-speaking side of the country versus the French-speaking), but the fact that private schools have to come up with their infrastructure to begin with, buildings etc. which is only reasonable, and of course a basic curriculum that has to be met (you can't expect a government to pay for e.g. schools that wouldn't teach any mathematics), of course for things like religion they are free in their choice, while at a state school students can choose which "religious"/philosophical course they take (various schools of Christianity: Catholicism, Protestantism, Orthodox... ;Judaism, Islam or of course a non-religious equivalent), you won't often get a choice at private schools, where Catholic schools teach Catholicism, Jewish schools Judaism, free schools may teach general culture lessons, etc.
Though this all does not take away there's still a difference between private and state education, many private schools simply try to stay "elitist" by organising expensive school trips, or other shady practices, to keep certain parts of the population out. And in reality the rules that are used to divide the subsidisations don't exactly give as much to private schools as to public schools, but they are gradually working on evening that out, but hey, politics...

@ Pithy, I went to a Catholic school, and to be honest most of the religion course (2 hours per 32 hour week), weren't that bad, disregarding the second year of high school were a real penguin, I mean nun had taken up the position of the previous retiring teacher. I actually suspect the last teacher I had for the course ( in the fifth and the sixth final year) of not believing in the "Catholic" "God" himself, more or less just teaching us about various religions, moral dilemma's and situations out there, and leaving the final thoughts up to us.
So Catholic schools don't exactly turn you into religious zealots, they just present their view a little more than otherwise, I still got evolution theory in biology, and big bang theory in geology/geography... Then again we don't have that many religious wackjobs running around as you do in America.

He's right. While there are so many idiots in the school, some of the teachers are willing to... Do a good job. I have an English teacher who can barely even tie her own shoes, but a Biology teacher that kicks ass and knows his stuff. The kids dont pay attention though, and then they fail.

It doesnt just depend on the teacher, but the kids too.

I went to a public school district with good education. The buildings and food still sucked though.

Um, I'm more in line with snuggles here. We need vouchers. There needs to be competition and choice involved in schooling.

Most people may find learning about religions boring and in their minds inapplicable to their lives, but in actuality, learning about various religions helps to better understand societal decisions. Religion may have been skewed in a number of faiths, but as a study it helps broaden your mind. Merely dismissing it is as ignorant as the intolerance many so-called religious people showcase about others.

That teacher should be fired! ANd the superintendent is punishing the kid?

Anyway on the issue of public schools, I thing that we need to create a system where we reward the good teachers and fire the bad ones instead of giving them all the same pay regardless of performance. We also need to allow people to chose which public schools to go to, that way they can compete. We also nned to pay our teachers more.

Since I don't see that happening anytime soon, boy am I glad that I am in University High.

I went to a public school and it was great. The food wasn't half-bad (though I'm not picky) and I had great teachers...for the most part. But like Jay, I took a lot of AP classes (5 in total in my last two years) and a few honors. But even without that, I had a great English teacher (not honors) and a great Geometry/Algebra 2 teacher. The public school system is great, but only if the kid applies himself.

Oh, and Daisy, at Catholic schools, you don't learn a variety of religions. You only learn Catholicism. And the religion permeates the other subjects since all the teachers are nuns. But if you get a good Catholic school (i.e. not the one I went to), your kid'll turn out great.

Kids can choose what school they want to go to, it's called Special Assignment. And for every student that passes the AP exam, the AP teacher for that class gets a bonus at the end of the year. So good teachers are rewarded, if they teach AP classes.
