The 10 Best Things to get out of Connectivity
Well I thought I would start up a little thread to share what I have decided on being some of the best GameCube to Game Boy connectivity features. Seeing as how not a lot of people actually use the darn feature, I figured I could spread the word on what is worth your time.

So it might not be the cheapest thing to take advantage of, but for those of you who have access to not only a GameCube, but also a Game Boy Advance, they can take advantage of a whole new kind of expierance. Although even after a few years now, the whole scheme really hasn't kicked off, there has been a series of great titles that really bring some great new features to some of the biggest games on the 'Cube. So without further ado, I present my Top 10 Best Things to get out of Connectivity feature to you guys, just in case you don't know what you're missing. Wink

10 - Pokémon Box Ruby and Sapphire

What is potentially a giant gimmick, Pokemon Box offers quite a bit to the table for the Pokemasters that are left out there. Seeing as how the Ruby and Sapphire games for Game Boy Advance feature over 200 creatures to capture, it can be difficult to manage and keep order of all of them. But Nintendo answers these problems with Pokemon Box, an electronic organizer which helps keep track of all your guys and then some. Tired of wanting to restart your game but losing all your Pokemon at the same? Simply upload them to your GameCube and never think twice about regretting your top player's that you once had.

Although not an actual game, but more of an accessory, Nintendo has even made the Pokemon Box expierance even better by pricing the game at a convienant $19.95. Not only that but a free GCN to GBA link cable, and exclusive Pokemon memory card 59 are also included in the box as well. As well with the new Pokemon Emerald and Pokemon Fire and Leaf titles hitting stores soon, Pokemaniacs will never have problems with their games again.

The Positives
+ $19.95 price point.
+ Includes link cable and memory card.
+ Works with Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Fire and Leaf.

The Negatives
- Includes no type of game, and is more of an accessory.
- Only for the hardcore Pokemon fan.
- Not found in stores, only obtainable at Pokemon Center retail stores or website.

9 - Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut and Sonic Adventure 2 Battle

Both Sonic Adventure titles for the GameCube feature the same general features, and concept, which is allowing to bring your Chao on the road. As most would know, in both Sonic titles, a bonus "Chao Garden" is included in the games in which gamers are able to take care of a tiny animal as if it were its own. Although nothing more then a virtual pet, the Chao's add a whole new game type to the Sonic atmosphere in which gamers can take care of the creatures by feeding them, and caring for them, and even play mini games with them.

An already cool concept becomes even better with the connectivity features, by hooking up to Sonic Advance in Sonic Adventure 2, or Sonic Advance, Sonic Advance 2, or Sonic Battle in Sonic Adventure DX, gamers can transfer their Chao data into the handheld games which creates a on the go pet. No matter where you are, you can take care of the creatures whenever and help them grow and learn more abilities. Once your done just connect back up to the GameCube and keep playing.

The Positives
+ You can use the Chao on the road to unlock goodies in the console version.
+ Can be used with or without a Game Boy Advance Sonic title.
+ Play for 30 seconds or 30 minutes, no matter where you are or how long you can play your Chao is always there.

The Negatives
- Must own a select Sonic title for the Game Boy Advance to get the most out of the connectivity.
- Very basic, and doesn't do much to improve on the actual games.

8 - Harvest Moon: a Wonderful Life

The Harvest Moon titles have always offered a lot of replay value in which could be considered a game that never ends. The ability to run your own farm and live in a village where the possibilites are endless, and there are so many things to do, the GameCube connectivity really adds a lot more to the Harvest Moon concept, which is a big reason why fans consider the GameCube Harvest Moon among the best. Player's have the ability to take their character data and link up to the Game Boy Advance version of Harvest Moon, Friends of Mineral Town and have their character explore the portable world of Harvest Moon. The opens a window of great bonuses for player's such as getting special items, and crops the are unobtainable in the actual GameCube version. Its a great way to take a break and explore a new area which features new characters and buildings which allows you to interact with loads of new characters.

The Positives
+ A whole new world to explore.
+ Will also be able to be linked to the upcoming title; Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town Girl Eidtion.
+ Handful of goodies for the GameCube version and Game Boy version.

The Negatives
- Must own both Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life, and Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town.

7 - Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc

Probably one of the more unknown connectivity features is one of the best. Although most connectivity features tend to benefit the GameCube title over the Game Boy version, Rayman is one of the few that does the exact opposite. By connecting the Game Boy Advance version of Rayman 3 up to the GameCube version, you can unlock up to 11 new levels in the GBA game which expands the game length quite a bit more. Not only that, but a multiplayer feature is also included in which you can unlock co-operative minigames that pit one player on the GCN and one player on the GBA against the computer. The GBA player must lay down a road of Tetris-like blocks for the GCN player to speed along. You can also race head-to-head against another GCN/GBA team!

The Positives
+ New features for both the Game Boy and GameCube versions.
+ A new multiplayer mode.
+ Expands gameplay on the Game Boy Advance version.

The Negatives
- A rather boring multiplayer mode remenisant of Rayman Arena.
- Requires both Rayman 3 for GCN and GBA in order to gain access to the Game Boy goodies.

6 - Legend of Zelda, The: The Wind Waker

Originally one of the first concepts brought up with the connectivity feature was what was later included in Wind Waker. During your progress through Wind Waker, Link will stumble across Tingle, the awkward middle aged fairy who wishes help Link on his quest to rid of evil. He will give you a Tingle Tuner, which will be displayed in your inventory of items, and if a Game Boy Advance is connected to the GameCube, when used it will literally create an overview map of the location of where you are at. What was considered something as which a father and son could use to play a game with, the GBA is used as a secondary controller for someone to control and to help the player controlling Link.

From Nintendo.com

When you rescue Tingle from the Windfall Island jail, he will give you an item called the Tingle Tuner. To use it, connect the GBA to your GCN, then use the Tingle Tuner as you would any other item. The player who holds the GBA can control Tingle as Link moves through the world. Here are a few things Tingle can do:

Uncover Secrets - There are many items that no one but Tingle can find, so having a friend play along with you is the secret to finding everything in the game. Be sure to search every inch of dungeons for Rupees, hidden treasure chests, and more!

Provide Hints - Tingle has tons of information at his disposal. He can tell you about enemies, give advice on how to solve puzzles, and offer information about ocean conditions and maps. If you ever find yourself stuck, you can be sure that Tingle will be able to help!

Deliver Items - Tingle can really come through when things are a the bleakest. He offers items that recover health and magic and can even shield Link from attacks for a limited time. Of course, his protection comes at a price, but survival is more important than Rupees!

Plant Bombs - For a low, low price, Tingle can drop bombs on unwary enemies or obstacles that Link can't get past. Of course, Tingle can also drop bombs on Link, so choose your second player wisely!
Give a Lift - One of Tingle's coolest items is the Tingle Balloon. Once you equip this handy floatation device, Link can hover for a short while in thin air! If you see a ledge that's just out of reach, try using the Tingle Balloon.

The Positives
+ No Game Boy Advance title needed.
+ Reveal hidden areas and gain extra items.
+ A shop at your disposal, literally anywhere you are.
+ Map; whenever, wherever.

The Negatives
- The shop doesn't come cheap.
- It only makes an already easy game, easier.

5 - Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures

These two games are what took connectivity to a whole other level, although continually bashed for being one big scheme to trick gamers to buy loads and loads of equipment, multiplayer can still never be considered the same again. Both still remain to bring out some of the most fun features in a game, period. Both use the same general concept, which being that it adds a multiplayer mode and makes gaming more easy and convienant. Although Final Fantasy did it first, Four Swords was the one that is considered to have used it to its best abilities.

Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles is more of a Gauntlet esque game, and not quite a Final Fantasy, gamers can play Crystal Chronicles with up to 4 people! The catch? Once more then one player is added to the game you must use a GBA as your controller in order to play. Yes, I know, who wants to pay hundreds of dollars for the game, the Game Boy's and the link cables? Well you don't have to. Either way, single player and multiplayer, the game is great, and if you are lucky enough to have friends who own GBA's, then you can part take in one of the best multiplayer modes on the GameCube.

Not only does the Game Boy act as a controller, but it makes the whole game a much more enjoyable time. There is no need for people being bugged by menu's and whatnot, in Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, it can all be done on the Game Boy, without ever bothering any of your teammates. It also provides an overview map for player's at all times, which indicates teammates locations, enemies and items!

As for Four Swords Adventures, gamers could take the role of Link and play the game by themself, or they could gather up friends and link up to play up to a 4 player game in which teamwork is a must, and you must work together but also work against eachother. The game features huge worlds to explore and become more complicated with the more players added into the game. The great thing about the use of the Game Boy though is the fact that gamers can work together on the TV screen or go into other areas alone with the use of the Game Boy screen.

The Positives
+ No Game Boy Advance titles needed.
+ Adds multiplayer.
+ Easy navigation and menu's that doesn't bother anyone on the screen.

The Negatives
- You need a GameCube, Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles/Four Swords Adventures, 2 Game Boy Advance systems, and two Game Boy to GameCube link cables, just to get the least out of its multiplayer option.
- No way to play multiplayer without it. (For Final Fantasy anyway)

4 - Metroid Prime

What is easily recognized as the greatest game for the GameCube, Nintendo gave gamers even more for their buck with the connectivity features. Although nothing revolutionary, players who own both Metroid Fusion and Metroid Prime will be able to access sweet special features by connecting the two systems using the Nintendo GameCube Game Boy Advance Cable. If you've completed Metroid Fusion, you can unlock the original NES version of Metroid in Metroid Prime. Just connect the two systems and you're ready to play. You can even save your game data directly to a Nintendo GameCube Memory Card. After completing Metroid Prime and connecting the two games, you'll be able to play through Metroid Prime wearing Samus's Fusion Suit from Metroid Fusion.

The Positives
+ Brings the classic Metroid onto the GameCube.
+ New suit only obtainable with the connectivity.

The Negatives
- Needs both Metroid Prime and Fusion to work.
- Nothing to extend either games story mode.

3 - Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour

Although number 3 on my list, it is personally probably my favorite of all of them. In the RPG mode of Mario Golf: Advance Tour you are able to build up your characters Neil and Ella and by upgrading stats your golfer will eventually become the best of the best. By hooking up Advance Tour with Toadstool Tour you can transfer data between the two to unlock loads of extra features. To start off, I took my Neil in which he can now drive 340 yards with the use of the games Power Clubs, and I'll tell you right now, there is no way in heck you could beat my -26 under par on Lakitu Valley without it. Not only that, but at the end of my round I got loads of expierance points that could be transfered to the GBA to further boost my character stats.

But there is more then just uploading your character into 3D, you can also do tons of other things such as buy special clubs in the GBA version and use them with GCN exclusive golfers. Better yet, if you have done enough in the GameCube version you will automatically unlock secrets in the Game Boy version. I don't want to give anything away, but there is no way to get 4 secret characters in the GBA version without it. From hidden courses to secret modes, the connectivity was well worth the wait and adds a whole lot of replay value into an already great game.

The Positives
+ Transfer your character from GBA into the 3D realm on GameCube.
+ Gain expierance points and special stats from the GameCube version.
+ Transfer data and records to unlock lots of secret course holes and even characters.
+ Saves character data onto the GameCube, that means once the data is transferred you can take your Game Boy out and Neil and Ella will stay in your roster forever.

The Negatives
- Requires both Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, and Mario Golf: Advance Tour to work.
- Not nearly as many unlockables in Toadstool Tour compared to Advance Tour.
- Every time you want to refresh your characters stats you have to transfer the data over and over again.

2 - Pac-Man Vs.

Easily, easily one of the greatest multiplayer games that has graced the GameCube. Although it didn't score the best reviews, it is simply a great underrated title that is simply designed especially for the connectivity features. The game is simple, players use normal GameCube controllers while one Game Boy Advance is used for one player. By starting the game you can choose to play between 2-4 players, in which the computer randomly selects who of the players will be Pac-Man while the other characters retain the position of the ghosts. The players are then placed in a normal enclosed arena in which the three ghosts can view their character on the TV screen, in which their viewing space is very limited, while Pac-Man uses the Game Boy to view the game in all its arcade glory. The gameplay is simple, but if you can take advantage of the four player mode you will not be disappointed.

Nintendo also realized the fact that it wasn't exactly a game, it was literally given away for free. Most retail stores would give discs away with any preorder or pormotional item in the store. Among that gamers could also buy the Player's Choice version of Pac-Man World 2 which included Pac-Man Vs. inside of it for a simple $19.95. If that wasn't enough, the majority of R: Racing Evolution and I-Ninja cases (both also produced by Namco) would also include the Pac-Man Vs. title for free.

The Positives
+ Practically free of charge.
+ 2-4 players can play.
+ No Game Boy cart needed.

The Negatives
- No single player mode.
- Dull gameplay and graphics, not exactly for the mainstream gamer.

1 - Animal Crossing

Yes, the number one choice is Animal Crossing, which for anyone who has played the game would know it's a no brainer. By connecting a Game Boy Advance you can visit a tropical island in which you can gather fruit and gain quite a bit of money if you play it off right. Aside from that, Animal Crossing is also the only game to use connectivity with the Nintendo e-Reader, and that is exactly where the game shines. By going to the post office in the GameCube version you can visit the e-Reader machine, where by connecting up to a Game Boy with an e-Reader in it, gamers can swipe, literally hundreds of different cards to get free extras like clothes and furniture. The Animal Crossing e-Series contains hundreds of cards and the majority of them can be linked to the GameCube version which adds so much more to the level of gameplay. Animal Crossing which already contained over thousands of hours of game time, only adds more with its connectivity features and gives gamers so much in the overall game play.

But wait, that's right there is even more, within the game you can unlock various old NES games such as Donkey Kong and Balloon Fight. By connecting up to a Game Boy you can transfer the game over to the Game Boy and take it on the road. Sadly it can not be saved, and once the Game Boy is turned off the game is lost, it is still a great addition for any gamer.

The Positives
+ No Game Boy Advance cart needed.
+ Exclusive bonus island unlocked.
+ Loads of free items.
+ Allows NES games on the go.

The Negatives
- Hardly any besides the fact you need an e-Reader in order to get the most out of everything Animal Crossing has to offer.

Noteworthy Games

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell and Splinter Cell Pandora Tommarow
Includes a special map feature displayed on the Game Boy Advance that includes enemy locations and more.

Pokémon Colosseum
Bring your Pokemon roster into the 3D realm, where you can upload all your Pokemon from Ruby and Sapphire into the Colosseum and duke out all new enemies and more. Not only that but you can also transfer old, unobtainable Pokemon that were featured in past Pokemon titles, but not Ruby and Sapphire from Colosseum to the portable screen.

The Sims: Bustin' Out
By hooking up the Game Boy version to the GameCube version you can take your GameCube character on the road by transferring the data and making sure you never leave home without your Sim. Released multiplatform, the GCN version is the only to feature such a mode, which makes it the best of the bunch.

Billy Hatcher and The Giant Egg
Portable version of games like Puyo Pop, until an actual version is released on Game Boy, this remains the best GBA puzzle title.

For a complete list of every GameCube to Game Boy Advance connectivity title then check out Nintendo's master game list located here.

-------------------------

Well that marks the end, hope you guys enjoyed it, and hopefully I can bring in a few more features like these. Until then enjoy and maybe some of you will gain a bit more respect for the connectivity scene. Smile

Great post, connectivity is a somewhat underated feature, just a quick thing, you technically dont need the GBA sonics, to take advantage fo the mini chao garden, what the GBA sonic let you do is save if you transfer your chao from the GC to the GBA(with a sonic game in the GBA) then you can save the GC chao on the game(so you can turn off the GBA), if you just have the GBA it will make a mini chao garden, but you can only go to sleep if you turn off the GBA then you lose the chao(this can also be used for cloning chaos(by transing it down form SA2 and adding it to SA1), it happens accidentlly,( i have to tails chao and 2 of my maxed out SA2 chao)

Without the GBA Sonic games, its rather pointless, wouldn't you say? Thanks for pointing that out though.

The Rayman connectivity sounds really cool, too bad Rayman 3 basically never existed where I live. And I bet either Zelda or FFCC will get the top spot when the list is done.

Because of the GBA's limitations. Once PSP comes out, it'll get more recognition. I don't think it'll work with the NDS.

Great info indeed. But i think the DS will make connectivity even better.

I'm not so sure about the accuracy of your AWL info...I didn't hear anything about a new world being opened/new areas to explore. But Friends of Mineral Town also gets many bonuses, including AWL character profiles in the library, bonus recipes, a record player and records from Van (I think...), and eventually a beach house.

The Friends of Mineral Town world is opened from a Wonderful Life, which is a whole new area in itself.

I don't think you quite get what I'm saying, by linking to Friends of Mineral Town that is pretty much opening a new area up for your character in AWL because you can travel freely in both with that same character.

Yeah I just bought Toadstool Tour and linked up, very rewarding. I can get experience in the game and send it back over to Advance Tour.

But that Metroid link is also great, the Fusion suit in Prime is awesome.

A few small things.. the Rayman 3 link, for the Gamecube bonus you don't Rayman GBA, plus you don't need to play with 2 GBA's. It can be done with one player on the Gamecube, one on the GBA, and it is fun.

I'm wondering what's going to be 2 as I'm positive four swords will be #1. I can see you putting down Phantasy Star, or Animal Crossing, but Splinter Cell, and Pandora Tomorrow deserve some recognition as well. Having a visual map of your surrounding, telling you where enemies, cameras, etc. are is extremely helpful, and is an actual gadget you can use in the real world to make you feel sorta like a real spy. It's how connectivity should have been used for Everything or Nothing.

Four Swords has already been added as part of FFCC.

My guess is Pac Man Vs. as #1...not sure about the other one though. Animal Crossing probably, because it allowed you to take all those NES games on the go.

Yeha i guess adding FSA to FF CC is a good idea as they both act upon the same premise more or less(i think FSA is better though).

Good call vince(minus the order) i had forgotten about Pac vs and Animal crossing, oh well great thread anyway smokey, hope this gets a few non-believers, to give it a whril.

I have yet to read the whole thing, but I wanted to comment on Fusion/Prime connectivity: I think it sucked! After unlocking both the original game and the Fusion suit, I realized the GBA didn't benefit from it at all, and more importantly, that it was a gimmick to make people buy unnecessary hard and software, when it could have been so much more! I'm a connectivity supporter and want more games to make use of it to enchance the gameplay in fresh and gratifying ways that wouldn't be possible otherwise, not just to make people pay to unlock a feature.

Kirby's Roll'O'Rama (or whatever it was called recently), that the best use of connectivity I've ever seen. Release it Nintendo!!!

I also wanted to congratulate you for this thread and for being a somewhat valuable human being. Thanks!

Fantastic work. Unfortunately for me, I have not been able to play any games that offer GBA/GCN connectivity. But this isn't because of a lack of interest, rather, I just don't have the means to partake in the innovative scheme. You've peaked my interest though (jerk Wink ).

I've noticed a few of the unlockables and features mentioned can actually be attained without the GBA/GCN connection. How you ask? The infamous Action Replay of course. I have visited the Tropical Island in Animal Crossing and it is good.

Anybody here know if the level editor for Mario vs DK is there? I love level editors!

Yeah!

PacManVS is great!

Ware Ware should of had the ability to unlock mini games already recoverd from the GBA version of Ware Ware. But the GBA controll here is nice for this game!

I'm somewhat bumping this to ask what other features you guys want me to post, or you would be interested in hearing more about.

BTW, I saw that Vince included this in his mailbag, very cool, thanks man, glad you liked it. Smile
