St. Louis (KMOV) – Veterinarians and the elephant management team at the St. Louis Zoo are monitoring Ellie, the pregnant Asian elephant, around the clock as she gets closer to giving birth.

Through daily hormone analysis of Ellie's blood, the endocrinologist at the zoo has determined that Ellie's progesterone levels have dropped significantly in the last two days.

Zoo officials say that rapidly decreasing progesterone levels indicate that the onset of labor is close at hand and will help them predict when the birth will occur. They estimate the range of time for delivery as from one to 13 days after the progesterone levels decrease.

This will be the second baby for 34-year-old Ellie and the first for 13-year-old Raja, the first Asian elephant ever born at the St. Louis Zoo.

Elephant gestation can range from 612-699 days. Elephants can weigh 250-350 pounds at birth. Blood tests earlier in the pregnancy indicated that the baby is a female.

Zoo officials say Ellie is doing very well. The zoo staff is cautiously optimistic that this will be a successful birth and healthy baby. Ellie's daughter Rani is due around February 2007. She is also expecting a female.

Baby elephant at St. Louis Zoo passes "well baby check" with flying colors.

ST. LOUIS (KMOV) -- The newest addition to the Saint Louis Zoo, a baby Asian elephant, has passed her "well baby check" with flying colors. The female elephant born on Wednesday continues to bond with her mother, Ellie.

Zoo officials say the baby elephant with Ellie's guidance has figured out how to nurse. They say the 341 pound elephant is still trying to figure out what to do with her trunk and waves it around uncontrollably.

The father of the young elephant is Raja. He was the first Asian elephant to be born at the Saint Louis Zoo. He is 13. The newborn elephants mother, Ellie, is 34 years old.

This is Ellie's second daughter and the first for Raja. Ellie's first daughter, Rani, is pregnant. Raja is also the father of that unborn calf which is also a female. Rani is due around February.

The Saint Louis Zoo will introduce Ellie and her baby to the public in the next few weeks. A naming contest will be announced as soon as details are finalized.
