Sorry for the messed up tags.
Tried to correct them but a 500 error came up & I had to wait to fix it.

Reading about that mess over in the Middle East, seeing a message board linked to a quote from Chomsky on the cause of this incident & learning more about the guy as a result inspired this post.

The guy makes a LOT of sense.
So much so that I'm surprised the U.S. government hasn't deported him yet. Being a bit below the radar in mass public consciousness must be saving his neck. Wink

I coulda posted a quote or two or just left a link but I thought it would be better for everyone to see the words for themselves firsthand. Lots of well-thought-out commentary from that guy on matters of the world.

Dude, you're gonna have to sum that up for us. I'm sure it's probably intelligent, but most people don't have the ability to stare at 72 pages of text and try to understand it.

Actually, I'm a little miffed about the 5000 character limit for PMs =/ This one time, when I was sending PMs back and forth with Zanzaa, I had to break up the post into 6 mini-posts and send them seperately. Zanzaa sort of disappeared now though.

I appreciate your enthusiasm, johnlucas, and I'm sure you very honest in your posts and such, but really, you seem to be excessive in your posting habits. As others suggested, a "Best of" brief list of quotes would have sufficed instead of the 72 page-long one your provided. And a link for those who wished to read more Smile

From what I read, it does seem that Chomsky is a bit over the top (do I sense a connection there? hmm . . . ), and I do think he's one of those kinds of people who can't ever be wrong in their own eyes. He certainly seems to think a lot about his opinions before letting them out (like you), which is definitely nice, but in the end, I think he may be a little crazy. But smart. Crazy, but smart. And I don't agree with some of his opinions, of course.

Okay...

So two guys seen in a picture together (such as FDR and Stalin) and which have been military allies means nothing.

But two guys in a picture just sharing tea means everything?

Who would have known that sharing tea would be a much more important political and historical event than actually signing and entering into multi-national military pacts and treaties that have an impact on the history of human civilization.

Does that mean it means nothing?

Anyways, I'd say the defeat of Hitler's Nazi Germany was a common belief/goal. And just because a military alliance is one of necessity, does not mean that two seperate opponents can not respect one another. Winston Churchill has spoke quite a few kind words of admiration about the Russians after the end of the Second World War.

why would an MIT professor go and meet with the leader of one of the most murderous terrorist organizations on earth? the guy isnt even a politician, he is a TERRORIST LEADER. it would be like chomsky meeting with bin laden.

I never said I knew. I never heard or read his explanation.

I don't know, I haven't heard or read anything that he's written or said--specifically in reference to the U.S. and Israel. And when I asked you to provide me with such information, you didn't. So don't blame me when I don't know what you're talking despite having asked you to explain yourself.

sure, i agree. so i guess chomsky and hezbollah share the common belief/goal of destroying israel and the united states.

I never said I knew. I never heard or read his explanation.

because he's a jew hating anti-american, anti-israel scum bag. he has said time and again that america is the greatest threat to the world, that its the biggest terrorist organization on earth, while at the same time meeting with terrorist groups and proclaiming their "victories" as victories for everyone "fighting" oppression. he is either sick, evil, and twisted or just completely brain dead.

I never said what it specifically means, just that it means something different and probably more substantial than having tea together. You're the one that was apparently insinuating that it means nothing in comparison to having tea.

sure, i agree. so i guess chomsky and hezbollah share the common belief/goal of destroying israel and the united states.

As I said above, signing a military pact and having tea are two different things. There's no gradient correlation between sharing meals and drinks and political ideas, e.g. having tea = neutral diplomatic relation;, having tea and biscuits = military alliance; having tea and biscuits and shooting pool = pact for global domination.

Finally! Thank you.

Er... Wait, this is exactly the same thing that Assman linked to. And though I never mentioned it earlier, I wouldn't say this transcript indicates much about Chomsky's political views, neither does it show him to be an anti-semite. It certainly show's that he's anti-U.S./Israeli-government, yes, but I don't see how disagreeing with and opposing government policies makes one a scumbag.

As for his saying that "that america is the greatest threat to the world, that its the biggest terrorist organization on earth," I think that's merely just a fancy way of saying "violence/hate/suffering begets violence/hate/suffering".

It's just a fancy way of his saying that since the Cold War Era The US has been imposing terrorism on third world nations that do things against US economic interests... according to Chomsky at least. Read the book "What Uncle Sam Really Wants" I think it can be found online in fact. Search google for it, you should find it easily. It will give you Chomsky's perspective on things. I'm sure you'll find it interesting, Caster.

Snuggles, you have no idea what Chomsky thinks about anything. You just make crazy ass assumptions. It's ridiculous. Chomsky isn't taking the side of anybody. Since I've read much of his material before (and recently too, I decided to pick up my Chomsky books lately), I'll say that he doesn't support any one group, but rather, is against all groups that promote violence for their self interest. To Chomsky, talking with that dude would be the same as talking to any American president. Since under his view, all American presidents have committed acts of terrorism / war crimes on smaller nations before that are no different from what terrorism has been committed on the west.

Its a fancy way of justifying islamofascist terrorism.

There's a song by Bob Dylan called Talkin' John Birch Paranoid Blues. If you were in the sixties that would be you.

bob dylan

Well, I was feelin' sad and feelin' blue,
I didn't know what in the world I was gonna do,
Them Communists they wus comin' around,
They wus in the air,
They wus on the ground.
They wouldn't gimme no peace. . .

So I run down most hurriedly
And joined up with the John Birch Society,
I got me a secret membership card
And started off a-walkin' down the road.
Yee-hoo, I'm a real John Bircher now!
Look out you Commies!

Now we all agree with Hitlers' views,
Although he killed six million Jews.
It don't matter too much that he was a Fascist,
At least you can't say he was a Communist!
That's to say like if you got a cold you take a shot of malaria.

Well, I wus lookin' everywhere for them gol-darned Reds.
I got up in the mornin' 'n' looked under my bed,
Looked in the sink, behind the door,
Looked in the glove compartment of my car.
Couldn't find 'em . . .

I wus lookin' high an' low for them Reds everywhere,
I wus lookin' in the sink an' underneath the chair.
I looked way up my chimney hole,
I even looked deep inside my toilet bowl.
They got away . . .

Well, I wus sittin' home alone an' started to sweat,
Figured they wus in my T.V. set.
Peeked behind the picture frame,
Got a shock from my feet, hittin' right up in the brain.
Them Reds caused it!
I know they did . . . them hard-core ones.

Well, I quit my job so I could work alone,
Then I changed my name to Sherlock Holmes.
Followed some clues from my detective bag
And discovered they wus red stripes on the American flag!
That ol' Betty Ross . . .

Well, I investigated all the books in the library,
Ninety percent of 'em gotta be burned away.
I investigated all the people that I knowed,
Ninety-eight percent of them gotta go.
The other two percent are fellow Birchers . . . just like me.

Now Eisenhower, he's a Russian spy,
Lincoln, Jefferson and that Roosevelt guy.
To my knowledge there's just one man
That's really a true American: George Lincoln Rockwell.
I know for a fact he hates Commies cus he picketed the movie Exodus.

Well, I fin'ly started thinkin' straight
When I run outa things to investigate.
Couldn't imagine doin' anything else,
So now I'm sittin' home investigatin' myself!
Hope I don't find out anything . . . hmm, great God!

so if, say, the pope sat down and had lunch with hitler, you would think nothing of it? you just dont have lunch with people that are evil murderers unless you some how agree or sympathize with them.

I've heard arguments both for and against the idea of how involved the Vatican was with Nazi Germany, in any case, a meeting between Hitler and the Pope wouldn't surprise me at all and nor would I think anything anything from a mere photo of it.

Let's say the Pope did have lunch with Hitler. Does a photo of the Pope and Hitler sharing schnitzel mean that a) the Catholic Church is in support of Hitler's anti-semitic policies or b) maybe the Pope was having a heart-to-heart with Hitler in an attempt to stop him from becoming a jerk?

One doesn't necessarily have lunch with murderers, but the prospects of having lunch with powerful political figures/organization leaders are much more probable. Like I said before, having lunch together doesn't really mean much; the conversation said during lunch probably does though, but you provided photos, not audio recordings.

sure, that israel and america must be destroyed. i guess you can call it a difference of opinion.

You've provided nothing so far that shows Chomsky thinks Israel or the U.S. should be destroyed. As Shortdude said, you're just working off of assumptions.

taking the side of murderers who want nothing more than genocide makes one a scumbag. or do you want to argue that nassrallah is just a nice old man?

Again, going back to the link provided by Assman/you, Chomsky specifically hasn't said anything in support of genocide; but rather many things against what he considers to be unlawful imprisonment.

its a fancy way of justifying islamofascist terrorism.

Well, if you consider islamofacism to be violence/hate/suffering in response to or as a result of violence/hate/suffering, then yeah. You see? You're falling into the loop.

And check your PMs. Are you ignoring me? Why would you do that? Surely it isn't that difficult to back up and defend your claims, ideas, and arguments if you're that sure of them.
