The Rub Rabbits

"Where Do Babies Come From" has a new name, as Sega of America has revealed that the game, the direct sequel to Feel the Magic XY/XX will be released in the US next year. The new title is The Rub Rabbits, referring to the performance group that assisted players in the current and previous mini-game adventure.

Though the game has been available for a few weeks in Japan, Sega of America let us test drive the English-localized version of The Rub Rabbits well before its 2006 release to get a feel of just weird, wacky and unique this sequel's turning out.

Like the original Feel the Magic XY/XX, The Rub Rabbits challenges players to perform special tasks to catch the eye of the woman of your dreams. In this adventure, though, many people are fighting for that girl's affection, and will do everything to get in your way.

Early in the game, your task is to simply chase after the girl by running up a down escalator, using the touch screen to increase your running speed and avoid the standard mall attendees (by standard, we mean tophatted gentlemen and sumo wrestlers) as well as the other guys also trying to get her attention. By the time you've scored her as your girlfriend, you will have shot down parachuting rivals with a blow gun, tossed disks of love at her like shuffleboard pucks, serenaded her on the piano, unicycled across the roof of a building...all through the use of the Nintendo DS touch screen and microphone.

The twist here: you've unintentionally grabbed the eye of another girl who wants YOU as her boyfriend. And she'll wreak havoc with your newly-acquired relationship to get her way. Which means you'll have to endure more mini-games to avoid getting locked into her stalker-like affection.

The Rub Rabbits has tons of touch screen mini-games, several more than the original Feel the Magic with a higher level of absurdity than last year's release. The development team clearly worked hard to go over the top both in situation and in sexual innuendo -- wait until you have to woo the girl with the scent of a rose. If you thought rubbing dirt off the girl in Feel the Magic was erotic...

The really, really "out there" mode in The Rub Rabbits is the game's "Baby Making Mode." Two players (potentially a girl and a guy, but hey, we live in a much more tolerant society these days) hold the DS system to see just how compatible they are. Each person enters their birthday, age, blood type, and whether they're seeing anyone or not. With this data in place, players then work together to slice a cake using the D-pad and buttons -- accuracy counts here, as the game will take the entered data and the accuracy of the cake slicing to determine the baby you two will make. Once the cake has been sliced...voila! A newborn baby is here!

Once the baby has been brought to the world, the parents (or the owner of the DS) can name the baby with a handwritten signature. This baby then acts as a "liaison" of sorts, as players can now send their babies to the park and visit other babies out there. Think of this like Rub Rabbits' version of Bark Mode. Players can trade custom textures between their systems using this option, with players leaving their system on and transmitting in sleep mode.

Visually and sound-wise, The Rub Rabbits follows the style that's already been established in Feel the Magic. The development team is now using its 3D engine across both screens instead of one, which gives the designers much more freedom on creating the mini-games within the product. It looks and sounds extremely quirky, but in a very fun and different kind of way.

Watch for a release of The Rub Rabbits early next year.

Would I die for you > Feel the magic
Where do Babies come from > The Rub Rabits.

That title only makes sense in Europe, where th'original was released as "Project Rub"

So wait, do they expect women to play this game, or are two guys going to meet up and slice the proverbial cake?
