Thinking about buying a PSP
Ok, here's the deal, yo. Me, my mom, dad, and little brother are going all the way down to North Carolina for my sisters wedding (which is a long way from NorthEast Ohio). Now, 8 hour car trips are absolutely no fun. Esspecially with no food, beverages, little 9 year old brother within a 2 foot radius, and an obessively over used Neil Diamond CD playing over and over and over. My family recently bought a new car, hense why can't have food or drinks on the way down. So, in the panic of the oncoming boredom, I suggested we get something like a movie player. With the PSP being a music player, movie player, and game player, I figured "what better way to go?". Now, I do have a few concerns with the PSP...

1.) Freaken dead pixels. I hate DP's. What are the odds of getting dead pixels and how many of you have them?

2.) I'm so afraid that if we hit a bump or something it'll fling outta my hands and hit something. Damaging the system. What's durability like?

3.) What's the quality like on the movies, music, and just the screen overall?

That is all... thank you.

You could spend about the same and get a high-quality portable DVD player with a much better screen... and then you don't have to buy new movies for it. A PSP would just be a big waste of money.

If you look around you can get a brand name one with a 7" widescreen LCD display for less than the cost of a PSP.

I work at EB... I see these things come back all the time. I'd say about 50% of them have dead pixels. Significantly less than that (maybe 10-20%) are actually noticable when playing a game... but movies are a different story, they're more noticeable against a still background.

The thing is also extremely fragile. We had a guy break his battery pack cover in the parking lot right after he bought it. They come back all the time with stuck or broken buttons, broken disk doors. This thing is built worse than the PS2.

Edit: And seriously, I'm not a fan of the PSP... but I'm not just being a fanboy here, I see this happen on an almost daily basis. If you do decide to go with a PSP just BUY THE UNLIMITED WARRANTY, FOR ALL THAT IS SACRED!

Edit again: To answer your third query, the music depends on the compression you use, you can make it almost CD quality since it's just playing the mp3 off the memory card. Movies off the memory card is less attractive, unless you don't compress it at all and have a huge memory stick.

UMD's look very good, because of the high-def display... but it's still pretty small for watching movies. You are so much better off with a portable DVD player, it's not even funny.

I have owned both a PSP and DS... They both weren't really my thing... Since both had hardly any games worth owning (That will change for the DS though) and I wasn't out and about enough to really use them.

Now to answer your questions.

1. When I had my PSP I only had one dead pixel. I did't even notice it when stuff was happening on screen. I don't know what your chances are of getting one, but I have heard alot of people getting them (around launch) it might have changed since then.

2. If you drop it in your car... everything will be just fine, unless the screen happens to land on a really sharp object or knife. I dropped my PSP on my carpet before and it worked perfectly fine.

3. The PSP speakers themselves suck for both Music and Movie playback. The headphones they pack with them though are surprisngly good for both music and movies. The screen is awesome for movie playback but in the sun it's hard to see the screen. As for utilizing the movie feature... I recommend scouring the web to find out how to rip moives from DVD and converting them into MPEG4's to put on a Scan Disk Memory Stick. This means you'll have to buy a larger memory stick then what the PSP comes with (32 megs). A 512 should be sufficient (They are between 70 and 90 bucks). Getting UMD's will be a waste of your money unless they have special features that the DVD doesn't have. (BTW no UMD has any special features... cause they are a stupid idea to use for movies.)

Typical Sony product. I guess I should have known better to think they actualy made something worth getting. If it doesn't got the games, there's really no reason to get one... and the games right now are all BLAH. I have seen the light and the light is a platnium dual-screened beauty.Smile

You know after getting a huge amount of time in on the PSP this weekend, I'm going to go ahead and say buy one. I've gotten my hands on about 10 PSP's since launch from friends and such, and only one has had a dead pixel. And if it bothers you, Sony will replace it. I always thought the movie idea was stupid, but after watching Spider-Man 2 on the way up to my cabin and it was great. The games are fun, and more are coming.

If you want a multimedia get the PSP, the battery life might not last you the whole trip, but it should get the job done.

Oh and on the topic of dropping it, a lot of my frineds have lost grip of it, lucky enough on carpet floors and such. I don't think the device could survive a free fall to a solid floor, but small drops and such won't damage it at all.

PLEASE don't. Once the good games come out and the price is reasonable, maybe you can show Sony they're worth it. But for that amount of money, you could get a portable DVD player, and a used GBA SP with some truly kickass games. If you wanted a watered down music player, and a movie player that only plays UMD's...um, no. Just no. The only reason to buy the PSP would be the games, and they don't even have that going for them. Get something else, wait for the PSP.

If you were still considering the PSP, i would say, think of the battery. It would probably die out halfway through the trip, then where would you be. But i am just reviving a dead thread here, so +1.

The PSP is great - I have 6 games, I love every single one of them, and I have never had the battery die - that's even after not charging, watching spiderman 2 all the way (UMD movies most taxing on the battery), and then playing hot shots all the way on the rest of the car ride - I'd say 8-10 hours, which DS can prolly beat (but not by much) - considering the games on PSP compared to DS, I'd recommend it tenfold. Not only that, but I use my spare room on the memory stick to put movie trailers, or you can put whateva. DS is **** till, well, either game prices go down, or AC or MK comes out.

I do, but I usually only get about 5 hours of game time on mine with a full charge. I'm still selling it though, and I'll make back more than what I spent on it most likely(or close to it). I'm putting money towards my XB360 preorder, grabbing Capcom Fighting Evolution and King of Fighters: Maximum Impact for the Xbox, and getting Kirby Canvas Curse and some other NDS game as well. Money I was going to spend on a few other PSP games is now going towards a new custom built Xbox arcade stick(about $160 shipped) that I will get later on this summer. Now thats money well spent IMFO. Oh yeah! Dance Wink

As his decision had already been made.

To be fair, you also pronounced "dead" that my thread, Lack of Sexual Attraction Equals Lack of Depth? because it hadn't had a post in it in a little over twelve hours. Since that was a discussion of perception and philosophy and it was not inactive at the time, it made your conclusion ridiculous.

That's actually what prompted me to point out that you claimed this thread was dead - it seems like you're eager to say that threads are dead.

*shrugs*

To be sure, this thread would still serve a purpose even after the creator of the thread made a decision. There are many others who may read this thread, pondering the thought of buying a PSP, where what is said still might influence a decision. I digress...

That's just explaining my reasoning, though, for what I had to say. I'll at least take back the punch part. You may have not deserved that one.

The reason I've never been interested in buying a PSP is because I'm not often without the ability to access consoles. The PSP, to me, has been just another way to play high-powered games and, since I already have more powerful home consoles with bigger libraries, it didn't seem like something I'd bother with doing. The DS, on the other hand, supposedly offers a new way to play. Unfortunately, the console is worthless until the holiday season when good games come out.

That's how I've always broken it down for my decision.

Go with the portable DVD player man, it will cost you less, and if all youw ant to do with it is play movies, it's obviously you better choice. The quality of PSP movies is half decent, but I just cant do it. I tried watching SPider-Man 2 when we we're in line for RotS and it was an awful experience.

As for fragility (is that a word?), it is really fragile. If you do end up getting one, I think I heard that logitech was coming out with a carrying case for it that you can actually use the PSP while it's in the case. If not that, then you definitely need something, as the case that comes with it blows.

And finally, if you are playing music and movies from the memory stick, your DEFINITELY going to have to buy a new stick. All that comes with it is a measly 32 megs, do you know how much that is? 5 to 6 128KBPS MP3's can fit onto that entire stick, that's not taking into accountgame saves or things like that.

Youd need AT LEAST a 128MB stick.

http://www.camerasupplycenter.com/Catalog/Digital-Memory-Cards/Memory-Sticks-/Item/1696/Sony-128mb-Duo-Memory-Stick.php
http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Sony-128MB-Memory-Stick-Duo-Entertainment-Pack-MSH-M128AEP-/sem/rpsm/oid/119448/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

And 128MB is pushing it, thats roughly an album and a half... no where neer the space for videos and movies that you would want... unless you compress the **** out of them.

Id say, if you do it, buy 2x 1GB sticks and use that.

Then again, I still suggest the portable DVD player.

It just sounded like you we're more interrested in the movie playback then anything else. And I dont know why on earth you would get a PSP to play games on. THats just crazy talk. Theres nothing really out there rght now, save for like Untold Legends and such.

You're right, I am a bit more interested in movie playback. But, it would be nice to have a single gadget that does everything. Hense, why I was considering the PSP. But, DS is better overall choice. With a GBA movie player, I can do everything and still have a library of like 500+ games (GBA, of course). And of course, the obvious choice for watching movies would be a portable DVD player. Better quality and stuff. But that doesn't really matter to me all that much. As long as I get my movies, music, ect (regardless quality) i'm set.Smile Not too mention save a buck or two...

If you can afford it right now, go for it. I have one and am loving Ape Escape. Burnout Legends is coming later this year along with some other good looking titles. If you want to watch movies, I'd suggest you get a 1GB memory stick. Apparently those are hard to find on your shores right now? Especially the 1GB $99 SanDisk gaming sticks - sounds like a bargain but I don't see it anywhere. The only problem here is cost:

$250 + $39.99 for a game + decent sized memory stick cost = $350+ Frown I hope there's a price cut soon - doubt it though.

Newegg has 1GB SanDisk CF cards for pretty cheap. Check it out. According to GBA Movie Player's site, I can stuff over 480 minutes of video with medium quality onto one of those suckers.Thumbs up

EDIT: this card being for the GBA movie player, of course. You need one of those other SD memory cards for PSP. Which are more pricey, as far as I know. And the PSP is expensive enough, if you ask me.

Just so you know before making any uninformed purchases, but the GBA movie player sucks.

Oh, and portable cheap DVD players aren't very good. I mean I like mine and all, but the battery life on it won't even get me through a whole movie usually.

This is dumb....its a nintendo forum. And instead of giving advice, all these people are just gonna say "get a DS".

1. I have no DP's and i think if you have like 6 or more you can return it
2. very durable...nothing flys out like nintendo Fanynerds say
3. Movies look good, but it takes a big memory stick to get the good stuff and the music sounds good. (get Hot shots Fore! or MVP baseball or Wipeout)

EDIT: If you're gonna buy a psp...get the car adapter ($5 at most). I've been playin hotshot like a motha****er and i love the thing. So, i don't think you'll regret it. Beside...your not paying for it, right?

Hot Shots Golf, Lumines, and Wipeout all look really good. Mercury and Ape Escape might be fun and some of the sports games look like they're decent. Coded Arms and Death Jr. will both be out soon.

I'd say the PSP has the better game lineup right now.

Erm... i've read some great reviews for the GBA movie player. I didn't just look at it and say "oh! I want one!". Care to go into detail why the GBA movie player sucks?

It just sounded like you we're more interrested in the movie playback then anything else. And I dont know why on earth you would get a PSP to play games on. THats just crazy talk. Theres nothing really out there rght now, save for like Untold Legends and such.

Of all games, you say Untold Legends. Freak

Do we really need another PSP vs. DS topic again? They are both equally amazing systems that have advantages in some areas over the other, but also have drawbacks as well (DS -> graphics, PSP -> battery/load times). Get over yourselves already.

Play Yan sucks, badly. The GBA Movie player is pretty good from the reviews I've heard. Plus it can play NES games too.

Imp is right, it does suck. Big time. I owned one...the conversion takes ridiculously long. Lets put it this way: PSP's conversion for movies takes a while, GBA MP is worse. And you get much better quality on PSP.

DarthKorn - and the bunch of ports on GBA/DS don't count? That is just a silly fanboy complaint against PSP. I mean, most people are happy to replay Mario 64...but if it's a port on PSP, it must suck because it's a port. God forbid we ever see ports on the system.

If you can wait for a PSP price cut, I'd suggest you do so - there are rumours that there's going to be a PSP-only package for $199. Also a DS+M64 package for $149.99 - I don't know where I read this, but I read it somewhere a little earlier.
