New Gunstar Super Heroes Impressions courtesy of ignI'll admit that I was never enamored by Gunstar Heroes for the Genesis, not because of disinterest, but simply because I never stepped up and took notice when the game hit shelves more than a decade ago. But after playing around with Gunstar Super Heroes for the Game Boy Advance, I can really see what the hoo-ha is all about. The original Gunstar Heroes is on the list of many people's top Genesis action games of all time. It was developed by Treasure, the development studio spawned out of Konami internal folk who brought to life games like Contra to the world. Their influence spread into other action games, but Gunstar Heroes is the game that's immediately brought to mind when gamers talk about Treasure the game developer. Gunstar Super Heroes is the direct sequel to the original Genesis game, bringing back the red and blue action hero to the world of over-the-top shooter action. The game is on the show floor in Sega's and Nintendo's booth, and it's by far one of the most stunning and energetic games on the handheld at the Electronic Entertainment Expo. To be honest, it's just a balls-out action game, but it's one done extremely well on the handheld hardware. Players blast their way through a seemingly endless army of soldiers in order to get to the next part of the game. In the levels available for play at E3, gamers will blast through indoor and outdoor levels, levels that take place on the wing of a plane, levels that can be rotated 360 degrees, all the while firing as many bullets as the screen can contain. This GBA game is pushing some of the most elaborate 2D special effects ever seen on the system. Treasure has already had its hand in some visually creative games on the Nintendo DS; Advance Guardian Heroes was a decent step in producing some nifty "ooh neat" elements, but the slowdown that poured out of that product was just a little distracting. Astro Boy: Omega Force fixed all those nasty technical problems of Advance Guardian Heroes, providing a killer action game using a character only about one percent of US audiences even heard of. Gunstar Super Heroes trounces Astro Boy: Omega Force, at least in the short amount of time we spent with the game. Sega's clearly got a winner on its hand with Treasure's creation. They're proving that 2D is indeed not a dead element in gaming, and that the Game Boy Advance has a ton of life left in it, even if the system simply can't compete with current generation hardware platforms...at least in terms of horsepower. |

This is at the top of my list for handheld games to pick up this year. I'll probably get a DS that day too. |

I'm getting Astro Boy pretty soon. It'll help me hold until they release GSH. |
