Pretty rare games that one should look for (in this generation)
Posted May 10th 2005 by Victor Chaves.
Basically this N-Blog will just talk about how there are some pretty rare games nowadays that should be looked at and immediately bought. However, most of these games are from the PS2, and that is why this is not a Feature, but an N-Blog.
Now I'm sure people can name the living carp out of rare games that people will give their arms and legs for that have been on the map as old and rare games. Games such as Chrono Trigger, the whole original Final Fantasy series on the original Famicom and Super Famicom, and Escape From Monkey Island, just to name a few. However, there are some games that have gone under the radar and are rarely even known as existing, but these games are the some of the best games of this generation, and if you find one now(if it's not hard enough already), you wil have a collection that will be much respected for.
To begin with, the first game I will suggest is the game Sin & Punishment(I know it's last generation, but let's keep on the subject here! The rest will be current). This game was on the N64 and was released in only in Japan by Treasure. The funny thing about this game was that it was released by a UK company, but not released in America or Europe, only Japan; but to further on the funniness, the whole game is dubbed in english! Odd? I know! The game itself is awesome, as if one were to remember the game Jet Force Gemini, remember the boss battles where you were on a platform and moved from side to side and shot at the enemies? That's exactly how it is, exept you move like the game Star Fox 64. With this gameplay in mind, the game handles great, with controls being a breeze to figure out, the story is very well done, and the game will truly test your ability to think about a deep strategy while blazing away at the same time. When you play this game, don't play it with a guide(exept for kanji translations), but try to figure out what to do on your own. When you discover a hidden weapon in your arsenal, AND THEN discover that with it, the game becomes cooller to play. If you see this game, pick it up IMMEDIATELY. It's easy to mod your N64 too, so no worries there.
Another game that I consider rare, good, or just all around awesome, is Gitaroo Man by Koei. This game goes for about sixty bucks on Ebay, and does not need modding at all. Basically, you are U-1(you won!) and you have to beat all the bad guys till you beat the game(there's a story, but you don't need it). There are ten levels, and they all play different kinds of music that you will have to outplay to advance. You play by using the PS2 Left analog stick to follow a line on the center of the screen and pressing X to time the sound of the guitar to the line. The game is easy to learn, and tough to master. Basically you play Jazz(Big Bumblebee man), Alternative Rock(Death Baby!), coll japanese techno(Some dancing keyboards), which give the soundtrack an overall wide variety of good music to listen to(even the country song kicks a$$!). But just when you have beat all the levels and got a taste of the rediculous master mode(nearly impossible) there is a REALLY GOOD versus mode! Where players battle it out just like the main story, but this time you can be different characters! What I'm rying to say here is, You see the game, YOU BUY IT. You don't need that leg.
This next game is only rare in the sense that almost nobody has heard of it, and has completely gone under the radar to where I consider it a rare game(no retailers have it, as far as I am in knowledge of, Gamestop in Arkansas my have one on the off-chance[joke]). The game is Blood Will Tell, on the PS2. In here, you are a Samurai who lost 48 body parts to monsters when you were younger, and now you have weapons in placement of body parts to fight with. For your arms, there are now blades; elbow is a machine gun, and your knee is a cannon! What's also cool is that, for each body part you collect, not only do your stats change, but your performance and abilities change as well. A good example is in the beginning, you have no eyes, but can see through your "mental eye", so everything is black & white, but when you retrieve your "real" vision, where suddenly everything is now in Technicolor!(Err, color). The game is challenging, never mundane, awesome story to boot, and takes a nice twenty hours to beat(without a guide). And Finally, what's nice is that the game is pretty darn cheap too. This game runs around twenty bucks, a game for which I would gladly pay sixty for. Once again though, good luck finding!
These are some of the current "rare" games that are coming out that after this generation, will be considered as "cult classics". Heck, I'm looking for a copy of Sin & Punishment right now!
