Super Smash Bros Tournament
Posted August 22nd 2006 by J Edison Thomas.
It was like a week ago. So don't think it was like two days ago because it wasn't, and it's not even that relevant anymore. But you know what? I've had enough of Ben's thoughtful and well-written N-Sights up here on the front page. What, writing like six articles a month isn't enough? Nobody likes an overachiever, Ben.
So yeah, there was a Melee tournie in Gainesville (where I live, rock) over the weekend of the 12th. I remember this because it was my sister's birthday and neglected to call her due to spending my entire day at this thing. I also had work that day but failed to show up for obvious and shameful reasons.
Anyway.
The tournament itself isn't important, because I didn't win, and there's no story there to be told. "This one time I dropped out in the first round of a Smash tournament it was ball achingly awesome." No. The talk is in the nuances. Like the deal how the kid who always wins Smash tournaments is using Peach or some other lame character that nobody expects. Except in this particular tournament which found Fox as its victor, but I'm not going to let that ruin a really good generalization about these things.
Who is this guy, the guy who spends all his time mastering Peach? Is he that desperate to win? Peach is intolerably unfun to play with. She moves awkwardly, has gimmicky special attacks, and all her good moves are so retardedly unbalanced. Like dick-softeningly unbalanced. It's no fun at all to watch a match that has Peach in it. I'm not even going to elaborate because I know people understand this point and there's no sense in getting into it. But seriously. I know that Jigglypuff has that one cool move that lets you win matches without having to endure an exciting and fair fight. But is it really worth it?
I'm having trouble remembering what my aim was in writing this blog about this tournament. I think I was planning on relaying my misadventures in nerd-dom in an interesting story that might draw readers towards participating in such tournaments, but I knew I lacked the skill to appropriately set the scene so I changed gears.
The important point, the really important thing that should be remembered is this: I'm not updating N-Philes that often this summer partially because my schedule is packed and partially because the unpacked parts are spent playing video games instead of writing about playing them. Sometimes it feels as if I force a loose familiarity with gaming just as fuel for reviews, editorials, and N-Sights. I'm sure I've had months go by when I'm very productive on my video game website without actually playing any games. Other times I spend my daily drive trying to figure out how to best whore out this site so it can fund more video game purchases. Right now I'm healthily enjoying gaming as a passtime while merely ignoring the site. But don't be surprised if you see t-shirts for sale decorated with that little GameCube guy logo from like four years ago that people still never shut up about.
