The Tallarico Chronicles, Part I

Posted May 11th 2006 by Stephanie DeSiena.

Good morning, Internet! I'm usually not on the computer this early in the morning, but I figured I'd bang out a blog article because I know you're just dying to hear about all of the wacky fun stuff I've done in the past past two days! So, I apologize in advance for the typos.

I'm at this big event thing, or whatever. It's about video games, I think. Something about John Woo. Yesterday morning at the opening of the convention hall a group of us got split up, but after getting situated a bunch of us met up on the line to get into the Wii. I was traveling with Curtis in the South Hall before we realized that we were in the wrong hall entirely, but we got the hang of the convention center soon enough and met up with just Jared and Daisy from N-Philes, I believe. They were with two other dudes, you may have heard of them, the incomparable (!!! big words??? maybe???) Vincent Goodwin and Michael Quiroz. I just introduced myself as "NightsB" because I'm pretty sure no one recognizes me by my actual name, and every time I do people go "Oh! You're NightsB!!! Dork!!!" So, good times.

I'll give a quick impression of the Wii right now, because I have a bit of time. I'm interested in it, for sure, but the games certainly aren't as intuitive as I was lead to believe. I thought maybe I was just bad at the games that I played, but everyone seemed to be having trouble with that Wii Sports: Tennis game and the Wario Ware title, among others. Although I did manage to enjoy them, I'm not nearly as excited about Tennis as I am Wario Ware. My favorite Wii title that I've played though, by far, is Excite Truck. It's got such a nice sense of speed and the control works so amazingly well that I could see it turning into a respectable, full-fledge game.

I personally didn't stay in the Wii booth too long, so this morning we're jetting there and getting in line as quickly as possible. I've yet to try Super Mario Galaxy, Sonic Wild Fire, Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz, and whatever that stupid looking new Zelda game is called. I did, however, manage to check out a bit of the other booths! Also, I got an interview with Tom Crago, who is the nicest dude I've met in the industry so far. He's the CEO of Tantalus, an Australian handheld developer. He showed me a bit of Trickstar on his DS Lite, and I was impressed, so I'll be writing up something about that soon. Just not now, since I want to do it properly. Today I've got another interview, actually, that I'm going to be helping Daisy out. It's with Buena Vista Interactive, the company behind all of those amazing Disney games for the GBA. So, that should be interesting!

As far as pictures go, I'm going to be stealing a bunch more from danytoca, Xavius, NikJam, and mohd, so look out for that in part 2. I'm sure there are some interesting ones! I have to go back to the Sega booth with someone and take a picture next to their giant Sonic statue. It's way cool, and I think if we got a picture of that, N-Philes would be complete. Or maybe just my life. My life would be complete. I got a kickin' rad Sonic shirt yesterday, so it's probably already complete anyway.

I know I'm jumping around but we're leaving in 20 minutes and I just want to get this out while I still can. Yesterday I played a bit of Grasshopper/"Marverous" Interactive's new game Contact being published by Atlus. Curtis and I both agreed that it's probably not the best demo for the game Atlus could have put together, considering how it was the full localized game - some sort of MMORPG-style game which is very tough to get into immediately. I think Atlus is pretty bad at this E3 thing, actually. Their Deep Labyrinth was the same deal, and Persona 3 wasn't even translated yet. But, they try hard, and that's what matters! I saw some dude wearing the Atlus mascot's hat, so today I'm going to see if I can push him into a tornado or something and steal it from him.

Today I'm going to go back to that area in general because I missed a lot of third party booths. I never even passed by Capcom or Namco Bandai in the other hall, so they need to be checked out desperately. And I only got enough time at the Sega booth to be told off by one of their HR girls when I asked for an interview. So! Thursday and Friday should be busy for me, so I don't feel like I wasted a vacation. I mean, I didn't, because I got to meet Daisy! Hi Daisy :). I got to meet a lot of people over the past two days actually, so I'll start the name droppin' in part 2 of this awesome blog.

Check it out!

Also, how about that new Smash Brothers, huh? Doesn't it look horrible???
