Nintendo Direct - June 21, 2012

Posted June 23rd 2012 by Adam Grayson.

Oh, Nintendo...  It would seem the only time you don't announce news is during E3...  Lucky for us it's a whole two weeks after E3.  In case you all didn't see, last night Nintendo aired a new Nintendo Direct, Nintendo's "online home for exclusive Nintendo news," that talked about the Wii, DS, and 3DS.  I'll tell you the biggest announcement right off the bat—the 3DS XL.  Yeah.  I'll say that again.  The 3DS XL.  More info on that and more after the jump.

So right from the start of this 20+ minute presentation, the Regginator (Reggie Fils-Aime) smacks us in the face with the announcement of the Nintendo 3DS XL, which is, you guessed it, a new, super-sized 3DS.  In addition to the curved edges of the new device, the screens are also a whopping 90% bigger than those on the current 3DS system (4.88" top screen and 4.18" bottom screen), it will come packaged with a 4GB SD card (instead of a 2GB card like the original 3DS), and it will have a longer battery life than its predecessor (3.5-6.5 hours with 3DS games and 6-10 hours for DS games).  The 3DS XL does not, however, come with dual circle pads, much to the dismay (or relief) of certain gamers.  I personally am somewhat relieved this is the case.  Otherwise I'd be ever so compelled to shell out the cash for one of these puppies.  The 3DS XL will be available in red/black, blue/black, and all black on August 19th at a suggested retail price of $199.

After mentioning a few upcoming 3DS games (which I'll detail later), we get hit with a "Challenger Approaching" screen from Super Smash Bros. Brawl (for those who choose to eat up and speculate on every bit of new info on new Smash Bros. games, the screen was of Falco).  Nintendo of America's Nate Bihldorff tells us that Nintendo is teaming up with Namco Bandai Games and Namco Bandai Studios to create these new entries in the franchise (remember, there will be a Wii U game and a 3DS game).  Of course, series creator, Masahiro Sakurai, will still take the role of the games' director.

The next big (new) announcement was that Nintendo will be releasing two new Virtual Console games in the Nintendo eShop every week from July 5th through August 1st.  Example games given were The Legend of Zelda, Kirby's Pinball Land, and Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3.  Also, Super Mario Land will be discounted to $2.99 June 22-24 (this weekend).

Finally, Nintendo will launch a new website meant for 3DS owners to share their 3D photos taken with their 3DSes.  The website will be live at on July 2nd.  The site will allow users to upload their photos and submit them to be selected as part of the "3D Photo Gallery of the Week" as well as share their photos via social media sites.  No news on whether or not we'll be able to share videos with this service (don't count on it).

While those were the big, new announcements, the broadcast was full of other news.  Here is the video:

If, however, you'd like just the bullet points (minus the news above), here you go:

  • Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate

    • Four playable characters, including Alucard

  • Skylanders: Giants

    • New, larger figures (twice the size of others)
    • New figures that light up in real life as well as in the game
    • 3DS version has unique story line and 3D levels

  • New Super Mario Bros. 2

    • Coin Rush Mode

      • Uses StreetPass
      • Players only have one life per run
      • Game picks three random stages
      • Time remaining on level completion and height on flagpole give additional coins

    • Available August 19th (same day as 3DS XL)
    • Full local co-op for whole game
    • Buy as physical cartridge or download via Nintendo eShop
    • Downloadable Coin Rush levels will be developed after game's completion (not free)

      • Stressed that game will be a "full featured Mario game" from the get-go, DLC will just allow players to keep playing Coin Rush

  • Fire Emblem will release in 2013

    • Will also have downloadable content

  • Mentioned Pokémon Conquest as a segue to other upcoming Pokémon titles
  • Pokémon Black 2 and  Pokémon White 2 out this Fall

    • Pokémon from previous games encountered from the start (not just 5th gen Pokémon)

  • Pokémon Dream Radar can import Pokémon into Black 2 and White 2

    • Inlcudes rare/legendary Pokémon such as Tornadus, Thundurus, and Landorus

      • Will be featured in new forms in Dream Radar

  • Also mentioned Pokédex 3D Pro

    • Unlike the current Pokédex 3D, it will be a database of all of the Pokémon (not just 5th gen)

*Writer's note: Samus weeps quietly in a corner as she finally accepts the fact that Nintendo completely ignored/forgot her 25th birthday...

New Super Mario Bros. 2 looks better and better every time I see it. I am officially hyped! I think that I will make my first Fire Emblem series purchase in February 2013. Good tip about Mario Land discount, no one else mentioned that! I'm also interested in the 3ds virtual console, WarioLand in particular gave me a sense of nostalgia.
