New In Theaters: June 19, 2009
Posted June 18th 2009 by Derrick Lutz.

People sometimes tell me that I'm overly critical and always assume the worst. This weekly update shows them how right they are. I take a quick look at what's coming out in theaters this weekend, and why most of it is probably not worth seeing. If you get nothing else out of it, you will at least be informed of the titles of the movies being released this weekend.

The Proposal

I feel like I should hate this movie a lot more than I actually do. I'm going to watch this movie when it comes out on DVD, and I'm probably going to enjoy it. The thing with romantic comedies is it's all about the cast. The story is going to be dumb, obviously, but I generally like Sandra Bullock. If this movie had starred, for example, Jennifer Lopez or Aniston, I'd be all annoyed and act like it's an insult to cinema that dreck like this gets made.

Year One

This looks pretty funny. I thought I was sick of Jack Black and (especially) Michael Cera, but maybe this will be the movie to get me over that hump. Harold Ramis writes/directs; for some reason I was under the impression that he had done a lot more movies than he has. There's the famous ones like Animal House, Meatballs, Stripes, Ghostbusters, Caddyshack, Groundhog Day... and really not that much else. The lack of filler is kind of impressive in a way.
Limited Releases
Whatever Works - Comedy - Woody Allen gets Larry David to play a character that is not named Larry David but is still basically Larry David. If you like Larry David (or Woody Allen (what's the difference)) then you'll probably like this.

Yeah I'm looking forward to checking out Year One. I don't think it's out in the UK yet, though. Ryan Reynolds looks really odd in that picture. Like a wax model or something

Year One reminds me of that Chris Farley movie Almost Heroes, for some reason.
