Tired of Mario Stories? So is Miyamoto.

Posted June 16th 2009 by Jordan Mammo.

If you believe that Super Mario Galaxy for the Nintendo Wii was home to a deep, well-told and meaningful videogame narrative, well... you are horribly wrong. Thankfully, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto agrees, and is saying that Super Mario Galaxy 2 will not place as much of an emphasis on its storyline.

Though Miyamoto is often at odds on this issue with some of his other colleagues, notably current Mario director Yoshiaki Koizumi, he says that "in talking with him [Koizumi] this time, he agrees and feels that with Galaxy 2, there won't be a need for as deep of a story."

"I'd like to go with as little story as possible," Miyamoto said. Later he added that "With the Mario games, you don't need to have such a complicated setting where you have these particular characters with complicated backstories that can weigh down the bright and fun feel of the game."

Though some have expressed disappointment at this development, I can't say I feel the same way. In fact, I feel like the people that are disappointed are crazy. Mario Galaxy's story, along with the surprising amount of time the title spent explaining what to do, felt more excessive than like anything worthwhile. Miyamoto probably doesn't do more than dabble in the development of specific games these days, but it's good to know that when he does he still knows what he's doing. If Mario Galaxy 2 is a more free-flowing and cohesive experience then it's definitely a step in the right direction.

Honestly I can't think of a non-RPG Mario game with an extensive story that I thoroughly enjoyed. In fact, I'd say most of Nintendo's big-name titles suffer when they try to turn up the amount of storyline. Even Zelda and Metroid stumble along when they try to establish a scene without letting the main characters chime in with anything more than a head nod.

The story in Sunshine bugged the hell out of me (mainly because you couldn't skip the cut scenes), but I didn't mind (and actually kind of enjoyed) the story in Galaxy. I mean, most of it was told in that room and I don't think you really HAD to go in there, and when you did you could skip stuff I think. Anyways, this is still a good choice I think. Characters like Mario and Sonic aren't interesting as characters other than they way they look. I definitely don't care about their stories.

Just one more tip Sonic Team should take from Miyamoto.
