New In Theaters: May 22, 2009

Posted May 21st 2009 by Derrick Lutz.

People sometimes tell me that I'm overly critical and always assume the worst. This weekly update shows them how right they are. I take a quick look at what's coming out in theaters this weekend, and why most of it is probably not worth seeing. If you get nothing else out of it, you will at least be informed of the titles of the movies being released this weekend.

Terminator Salvation
I can't figure out how this movie got some serious interest from moviegoers.  Beyond the unavoidable hype that comes with any wannabe summer blockbuster, people seemed to think this movie had a chance of being legitimately good as a reboot of the series after the mediocre Terminator 3.  And I have no idea why they thought this.  It's written by the same poeple who wrote Terminator 3.  It's directed by McG, the director of such dogshit as the Charlie's Angels movies and We Are Marshall.  It's rated PG-13, which means the violence and overall tone will be kept mostly clean and family friendly.  Knowing these things, how was anyone fooled by a few trailers showing generic action?

Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian
Umm... I don't think I know who this movie is for.  Is it a kid's movie?  Or is it just a slapstick comedy for teens and older?  I guess it's supposed to be FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY.  Somehow I completely missed the first Night at the Museum; I always assumed it was one of those not-Pixar-so-who-cares 3D animated movies.  I did like how at the end of the trailer, under the release date they give this credit: "The Thinker sculpture by Auguste Rodin."  What?  That's necessary?

Dance Flick
"Dance Flick is a new comedy from the Wayans' brothers who brought you the hilarious Scary Movie franchise and White Chicks."  I have no words for the feelings I feel when I think about that statement and this movie.  My brain just makes a HHHHHNNNNNNNRRRRRRR noise.  Whatever that sounds like.

Limited Releases

The Girlfriend Experience - Comedy - I'm not always a fan of Steven Soderbergh's bigger budget Hollywood stuff, but his small experimental movies are usually pretty interesting.  This one stars real-life porn star Sasha Grey as a prostitute who provides a full girlfriend experience for her customers.

Easy Virtue - Comedy - Oh you early 20th century British people, your sense of humor is so dry and bitter!  This is one of those movies based on a play that I think probably worked a hundred times better as a play.

The Boys: The Sherman Brothers' Story
- Documentary - I guess the Sherman bros are famous composers or something.

I just saw my first trailer for Terminator and it does look pretty awesome. The choice of the director has me worried, but I'm okay with the writers from 3 coming back. The only thing I remember from 3 was the ending, and I liked that. Also, the CG in Salvation looks perfect.

I'll admit that I am extremely hyped for Terminator Salvation. Just got a good feeling about it.
