New In Theaters: April 17, 2009
Posted April 17th 2009 by Derrick Lutz.

People sometimes tell me that I'm overly critical and always assume the worst. This weekly update shows them how right they are. I take a quick look at what's coming out in theaters this weekend, and why most of it is probably not worth seeing. If you get nothing else out of it, you will at least be informed of the titles of the movies being released this weekend.

17 Again

Teen idol Zac Efron stars in this body-swap movie. Matthew Perry is 37 which I guess in Hollywood movies means you're old and your life is over, so he wishes to be 17 again. The next morning he looks in the mirror and he is Zac Efron. He enrolls in his kids' high school in an effort to connect with them or something. Who cares.

State of Play

Hey I think this is one of the first real movies to get a major release since I started writing this column. It only took two months. Russel Crowe plays a reporter uncovering a government conspiracy. The bad news is Ben Affleck is in this movie.

Crank: High Voltage

Like most Jason Statham movies, the first Crank was decent stupid fun. This sequel looks to continue the trend. If I had any real complaint about Crank, it's that it was kind of exhausting. These are not well paced movies, but I guess that's kind of the point.
Limited Releases
American Violet - Drama - Poor black people get screwed over by evil white police.
Sleep Dealer - Drama - People in the near future living their lives virtually, one dude fighting the man.
Is Anybody There? - Drama - Michael Caine befriends a young boy and probably dies near the end of the movie.
Every Little Step - Documentary - About revival of Broadway show "The Chorus Line."
Lemon Tree - Drama - Some woman fights the government to protect her lemon grove. Seriously.

Hey. Some women have children, some women have cats, some women have small porcelain dolls. Some have lemon trees. Though the women that keep the realistic-look-and-feel baby dolls, those ones I have no mercy for. Today's topic for me is dolls.
