Will Wright Focuses On Stupid Fun

Posted April 8th 2009 by Derrick Lutz.

The man behind Spore and The Sims has left EA to focus more on the Stupid Fun Club, an organization he formed in partnership with EA in 2001. The interesting thing here is that Stupid Fun Club is not a traditional game development studio. Their website labels themselves as an "entertainment development studio" whose ideas can be manifested in "video games, online environments, storytelling media, and fine home care products." EA gets the first look at any game ideas they come up with.

Normally when a well known game designer leaves a big publisher to lead a smaller development studio, it's exciting. The prospect of not having to answer to anyone means they have more room to be creative. But when we're talking about Will Wright, I'm not sure it really applies. For one thing, I would think he already had the freedom to do pretty much whatever he wanted in the field of videogames at EA. The other thing is Will Wright is a guy that cares about appealing to a mass market more than anything else. In multiple interviews he has mentioned that he'd rather have the best selling game of all time than the highest rated game of all time. So with those priorities, can we really expect anything all that fresh just because he's working under a different company name?

You know, I really like Will Wright. I was never crazy about the Sims and Spore ended up just being alright, but he's a really smart guy whose paved a lot of the roads I think games are going to be taking for a long time. He's an advocate for games in general and for games as a legitimate medium instead of cheap thrills designed for a particular demographic (kids, angsty teens who want to shoot things, etc). He's the type of nerd whose interested in everything for no reason other than he finds it interesting, plus he's a great speaker and a funny guy. Even though they make completely different types of games the only person I can think to compare him to is Tim Schafer.

I agree with everything HNB said except that "Spore ended up just being alright." Spore was amazing and the only part I got bored on was the last phase.

^ I've yet to play Spore, but that sounds like a problem (getting bored in the last phase) for a game that's supposedly infinite in scope.

@Hoborg - Spore was fun, but the end got boring and there wasn't a lot of depth in the gameplay along the way. I liked it a lot, but it wasn't nearly as big and as important and as wide in scope as it was made out to be by everyone, including Wright himself. It was sort of the Fable dilemma, although I liked Spore more than Fable.

I like Spore but a lot of the ambitious ideas he talked about for years are nowhere to be seen in the actual game. It's a case of polishing it down to the point where there's barely anything left.
