Seven Year Itch

Posted February 9th 2009 by Daisy Garcia.

N-Philes is a pretty old website, its origin stretching back to nigh on the 20th century. At seven years old, roughly 42 in Internet years, we're primed for either a mid-life crisis or early retirement – and we haven't been successful enough for early retirement.

Here's the deal: Since E3 2006, N-Philes has been on a rocky road regarding our relationship with the big N. While we're glad for Nintendo and the success they've seen with the Wii, it's been rough going here on the news angle. With Nintendo focusing its attention on non-games and targeting the kind of consumers who will never know what n-philes.com means, a lot of us die-hards felt neglected. Imagine running a Star Wars site at the turn of the century and then all of a sudden the new episodes come out and Star Wars is bigger than ever, but poison to people who liked the original trilogy. Would you keep your site up and trudge through it, or close up shop? This is the decision we faced, only we're a Nintendo site and not a Star Wars site, in case you got lost in that last paragraph or this is your first time here.

This decision was made marginally easier when we realized that we're relatively bad at everything else in life compared to writing about video games, and we still play games a good deal – just not exclusively Nintendo games. So we decided as a whole that if the world was ready for it, the time had come for N-Philes to branch out.

No, we're not going to turn into an X-Box fansite, like many of our forumers have buzzed about, despite the fact that X-Philes is a much better name than N-Philes. From this point on, N-Philes will be a broad-based site, covering multiple platforms, as well as movies, music, maybe even the dark field of comics if things go nutty. While we will never let our relationship with Nintendo go completely, we do understand that the majority of our readers are multi-console owners who have had to go elsewhere for non-Tendo information and speculation. "No more!" we say.

We will be featuring more blog-oriented content and interviews of prime players in "the biz", and a generally more diversified trough of datums and databits for you to chomp on. To put more focus on you, the beloved reader, we are retooling our gamer networking Wi-Philes subsite to incorporate more online activities and are reworking the user blogs to garner more attention so that others may share in your obvious genius. All of this is done with your needs in mind. And ours, since we benefit from more people using our site. This is known as "win-win", and it's the philosophy of winners like us. It's the way we're going to earn your loyal readership in the future, so stay tuned and keep reading.

Oh, and for those of you wondering about the beta thing, yes, we've taken a page from Google's book of web launches and gone live mid-way through construction, so to speak. Expect more features and aspects of the website to manifest and change over the coming days and weeks.
